William Barnes Obituary

William "Bill" Barnes was born on April 15, 1945 in Henderson, KY. He passed away at his home in Charlotte, NC on December 31, 2016.

He proudly served his country aboard the USS Robert H. McCard DD822. Upon discharge, he attended UNCC and graduated with a degree in Accounting. He worked as a CPA for the former Coopers & Lybrand, and Brooks Equipment Company until his retirement. He was an active member of his church and enjoyed singing in the choir.

He enjoyed reading (especially Stephen King), camping and fishing, and almost all types of movies and music. He even tolerated his wife's love of sports.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Becky; daughter Heather (Bill) Tracy; brother Wayne (Brenda) Barnes; sisters Judy (Richard) Slaughter and Juanita (Robert) Robertson; nieces/nephews Bob, Barry, Celeste, Brian, Jessica, Christopher and Audrey; and great-nieces/nephews Alex, Cameron, Hunter, Sydney and Ken.

Billy was a Holy Name school friend of mine and my husband, Lewie Barron. He was fun loving and a wonderful singer. Thinking of his family, Wayne and Brenda, also good friends.

Bill was one of a kind..such a sweet guy with the most beautiful voice. I went to school with him for 12 yrs and he never had an enemy! Had so wished he could have been at our 50th Class Reunion in 2013. My prayers and thoughts for all of his family and friends.

Prayers for your family in this difficult time. Even though I had not seen Billy in a number of years, he was part of making my childhood happier. We were related through the Hagers and he was in the class ahead of me at Holy Name in addition to living in the neighborhood. I will always remember his laid back manner and ways of encouraging others. There was a huge diocesan centennial celebration where students dressed in period costume and performed period dances. Billy was assigned as my partner (probably because we were both pint-sized). I have two left feet and he made it fun...even though he had a broken arm. I am sure that he will be missed, but his legacy lives on. He has fought the good fight. We will reunite at the Wedding Supper of the Lamb. Praying for the peace that passes understanding.

My thoughts and prayers are with today and the days to follow. Please accept my deepest sympathy on your loss. Bill was a great guy.

On behalf of the Neal Family I want to thank you Becky and Heather for all the years that you sacrificed time with Bill so he could not only help so much at Brooks, but help our family in so many ways. Being born on April 15th it's no wonder he was such a gifted accountant, but he was so much more than that to us, he was a good friend. I'm sure Dad was one of the first to greet him in Paradise and putting his arm around him said something along the lines of, "Hey Bill get a load of this!" Please know that you are in our thoughts and prayers. We hope you can find comfort in the fact that he's no longer suffering and that in the scope of eternity, you'll all be together again soon. Much love and gratitude! The Neals

Bill was the best Godfather ever singing "Borning Cry" with Frank at Cooper's Baptism and holding Corrie despite, as he said, her tiny butt being like "two grains of coffee in a sock." We have pictures of him laying on the carpet next to our children reading books aloud. Thank you, Mr. Bill.

Wayne and I are very sad to know this but also glad to know his suffering on this earth is over. He surely is in a better place. He sure had the best of care. Becky and Heather, Bob said you were excellent caregivers and we all know how much he loved both of you. We will be with all of you in spirit. Love and hugs always.
