William Cuthbertson Obituary

William Reynolds Cuthbertson

September 21, 1930 - February 4, 2025

Charlotte, North Carolina - William Reynolds Cuthbertson, Jr., Rennie, died on February 4, 2025, in Charlotte, North Carolina, at the age of 94.

Born on September 21, 1930, Rennie was the son of the late William Reynolds and Julia Hagood Cuthbertson. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Harriet Hampton Cuthbertson, and his sister, Marie Cuthbertson Faulkner.

Rennie grew up in Charlotte, where he graduated from Central High School. He attended UNC-Chapel Hill, graduating, a Tarheel through and through, in 1952. Like many in Charlotte, he had a long career in banking, serving as President of City National Bank and later as Senior Vice President and a member of the Board of Directors at Branch Banking & Trust (now Truist). At City National, Rennie was known for "relationship banking" before it was a widespread practice. He made business and personal loans based on his faith in people, more so than the soundness of their credit. He was a personal mentor to many young people in the Charlotte business community.

Rennie's life was also notable for his service and leadership in non-profit and charitable organizations. He was supportive of numerous organizations across the Charlotte region and among his leadership roles were President and/or Chairman of: Mecklenburg County Council, Boy Scouts of America; YMCA of Greater Charlotte; The Methodist Home (now Aldersgate); Greater Charlotte Foundation (now Foundation for the Carolinas) and the Central Charlotte Association. He was also a long-time board member at the United Way, Crisis Assistance Ministry and Greater Enrichment Program.

Other organizations that were important to Rennie were the Charlotte City Club, where he served as Treasurer and Board member, the Charlotte Country Club and the North Carolina Banker's Association, where he also served as Treasurer.

Family was always a priority for Rennie. He loved spending time at the beach making sandcastles, roasting oysters and fishing with his children and grandchildren, and extended family. He is survived by his daughter Carol Hamrick (Watts) and their children Hill (Laura), Ladd (Nini), Jack, and Ashe Hamrick; his daughter Ellen Archer and her son John Archer; his son Bill Cuthbertson (Leslie) and their children Will, Flynn and Kate Cuthbertson; and his son Tom (Jennifer) and their children Graylin and Dax Cuthbertson. He is also survived by two great-grandchildren, his sister Julie Clarkson, four nephews, one niece, four great-nephews, and six great-nieces.

The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to Rennie's caregivers from Aldersgate@Home. Their loving support created an environment of comfort, dignity and fun throughout the past year.

The family suggests donations can be made in Rennie's memory to either the Horizon Fund or to the Resident Assistance Fund at Aldersgate, 3800 Shamrock Dr, Charlotte, NC 28215; Greater Enrichment Program, 2035 Patton Ave, Charlotte, NC 28216 or Crisis Assistance Ministry, 500-A Spratt St, Charlotte, NC 28206.

Friends and family are invited to celebrate Rennie's life at The Duke Mansion in Charlotte on Friday, February 7, 2025, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Burial will be private.

I was fortunate enough to have served on the Board of Directors of Branch Banking and Trust alongside Rennie when he was Senior Vice President. As a Senior Vice President at National Welders Supply Company, I was pretty green when it came to the nuances in banking and Rennie was a wonderful mentor. He was always available to answer complex questions and he was a genuinely nice man. Rennie was a treasure ... he will be missed!

Carol, Ellen, Bill, and Tom,

I just saw Rennie's obituary in the paper today. I am so sorry to hear this sad news. I wish I had seen the obit earlier so I could have seen all of you in person at the visitation last Friday.

Your Dad was one of the best. He had a unique sense of humor and I always enjoyed running in to him at various places around town over the years. He was always the gentleman and I will miss him. It was an honor to know him. I am so sorry I could not relay my condolences in person last week.

I hope to see each of you soon.

Rennie graciously welcomed me to the legal community 45+ years ago and his mentoring of me as a young lawyer was like no other. His gracious, extraordinary service to our community, his authentic faith and service to his church, and his constant love and support of family and friends was an true gift to us all.

Rennie Cuthbertson was a Charlotte leader. He would never accept personal awards. What he did - he did for others. A gentleman of the highest order. Thank you Rennie for your legacy of kindness. God speed.

When I served as Minister of Education at First Methodist Church in the mid 1960s Rennie was supportive of the Education Program at the church, as well as many other things. I had also been banking with City National Bank for many years even before that and Rennie and his dad were very helpful to me when I financed the purchase of a boat. I was delighted to get to see him once again while I was serving as Associate Minister at Myers Park UMC. He was still his caring self, and I trust that his surviving family members can rejoice in that, and in the comfort of a loving God!

I served as Minister of Music 1996-2001 at First Methodist Charlotte where Rennie was a faithful member. We served together on many different committees. He loved his Lord and church. He brought clarity to every meeting he was the most respected man in the church. He was always supportive of the music ministry.
