Jim and Elysa (Maddox) Montgomery
June 16, 2024
ELYSA (Maddox) and I, Jim Montgomery, are more than pleased to pass on our memories and kind thoughts about Bill Gupton. Elysa and Bill were camp counselors at Camp Thunderbird; that's how they knew each other. Bill and I were fraternity brothers at ATO at Davidson. Bill was our Matchmaker! It was the week before Midwinters, the second weekend in February, and I didn't have a date. Bill suggested his friend, Elysa Maddox, might enjoy coming down from her school, Mary Baldwin College, in Staunton, Virginia. Long story short (and I assure you I could go on and on, and on and on), Elysa came down with a few other classmates for the weekend; she and I met on the blind date arranged by our mutual friend, Bill. This occurred in February, 1971. Three years and three months later, Elysa and I married! Last May 4, we celebrated the 50th anniversary of our wedding date. Included at our anniversary dinner were our three grown children, two boys and a girl, and our three grandsons. It is often we think of Bill and give thanks for his forward-thinking that we might enjoy a weekend together. We have now enjoyed 53 years of knowing each other, and 50 years of marriage. THANK YOU, BILL! From LEFT to RIGHT: son Nathan, grandson Tobin, daughter-in-law Paula; Elysa is in front and I am on the right between the ladies.

Elysa Maddox Montgomery and I are sorrowfully stunned by dear Bill's passing. I knew Bill from our ATO fraternity; Elysa knew Bill from Camp Thunderbird. We BOTH think of Bill every 2nd weekend in February, for that was when, in 1971, Bill put the two of us together on a blind date. Forty-four years later, 41 of 'em married, three children and two grandchildren later, Elysa and I still smile and give God our thanks for dear Bill Gupton...We too have been strong environmentalists, so we greatly appreciate the work and the stance and the role Bill played in NC after his pharmaceutical days were over.

So very sad to hear. Bill was one of my good friends in both Jr. High and High school. Remember hanging out in Oakdale with him, even though I was a Coolwood kid! So proud to hear of his passions and the life he lived!

My thoughts are with the family of Bill Gupton. I meet Bill when I was sixteen and a counselor at Camp Thunderbird. He was someone we all looked up to as a leader and there was always fun in the air when Bill was around.
I hope there is peace within your family. Bill lived life and he lived it well.
