William Hile Obituary

William Kirkwood Hile "Bill" CHARLOTTE - Mr. Hile, 93, of Charlotte, NC, passed away Thursday, November 1, 2012, at Carolinas Medical Center - Main. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:30 a.m. Monday, November 5th, in the chapel of St. Gabriel Church, with Fr. Frank O'Rourke officiating. Mr. Hile's family will receive friends at the church following the Mass. Bill was born November 20, 1918, at St. Mary's Hospital in Meadville, Pennsylvania, to Fred and Velma Stack Hile. After living in several places as a boy, including Brooklyn, NY, near Ebbets Field, then the home of the Dodgers, and meeting Babe Ruth through a neighbor while living in Detroit, Bill developed a lifelong love of baseball and, as he became a teenager, golf. He graduated from Stroudsburg (PA) High School and entered into the strenuous four-year B.S. Electrochemical Engineering program at Pennsylvania State University. During that time, however, he played baseball, was a member of the Penn State Players and Thespianswhere he met Mary Louthe ROTC band (alto horn) and the Blue Band, the Penn State marching band. After graduating from Penn State in 1940, Bill worked for Westinghouse. In 1941, he married Mary Louise Trunk on George Washington's birthday and later that year was accepted as an Ensign in the U.S. Navy. During WWII, Bill fought in both the North Atlantic and Pacific theaters on various destroyer escorts, the latter being part of the 7th fleet, escorting a convoy on the USS Bunch to Tokyo for the Japanese surrender in November 1945. Upon return to the US, he became inactive, holding the rank of Lt. Cmdr., and was appointed to command training on the Navy's school ship in the Great Lakes. Bill moved his family from Connecticut to Charlotte in 1955, when he established his manufacturers' representative business, W.K. Hile Company, Inc. and later added the distributor division, Hile Equipment Company, both of which specialized in industrial control systems. He also joined the then fledgling Carmel Country Club so he could play golf immediately. In 1965, Bill became a registered Professional Engineer and in the 70s, joined John's Island Golf Club as well as Bent Pine Golf Club in Vero Beach, Florida, where he and Mary Lou spent many winters until the mid-90s. Golf also took them on extensive travels around the world, often in the People to People program when they were hosted by different countries. He was also a member of the Southern Seniors and Tar Heel Seniors Golf Associations. From 1981, when Hile first installed its first computer system, he spent many hours customizing software to suit the business as there was nothing available at the time. He continued to do so until his retirement in 2001. Through the years, Bill was active in the IEEE, ISA and National Society of Professional Engineers. He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Mary Louise; a son, Kirk Hile and his wife, Paula Perry; a daughter, Diane Hile Johnston; and two grandchildren: Kristin Johnston Brooks, of Chicago IL, and Dr. Kirkwood Johnston, of Houston, TX; as well as many nieces and nephews. His brother, Bruce Hile, preceded him in death. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations be made to St. Gabriel Catholic Church, 3016 Providence Road, Charlotte, NC 28211. I knew Bill as a member of the Men's Club. He was always a friendly member.

Mr. Hile was an exceptional and passionate businessman. What a blessing he was to my mom, to me, and our family. Not only did he offer employment, but he also gave encouragement and support. Mrs. Hile, Kirk, and Diane, our family is grateful for knowing you all. Our thoughts are with each of you through this loss. Kind regards, Tonda (James A. Furr & the late Hilda B. Furr)

He was one of my best friends and associates. The of the best representatives I had. You could always trust Bill and I learned so much from him on how to be a good sales person. W.K. Hile Company was the 2nd representative for me when Weston & Stack went into business and I worked with them for 30 years, that's a great company to have representing your company. My thoughts are with his wonderful family.

My sympathy to Mary Lou, Diane and Kirk. Bill was a great friend and my mentor. Bill got us into the computer business, trained my son, Chris and graciously shared his programs with us. Bill was a very creative person and I shall be forever grateful for all I learned from him.

Bill was a great mentor to myself. He was a pioneer in the rep business. I will never forget the Hile meetings and Bill's knowledge that was shared at these meetings.

Bill Hile was a good friend to Acromag and our late founder Henry Patton. Henry worked with Bill to set up an early computer system for lead tracking. It was a source of pride for both. I met Bill years ago on my first sales trip to Hile. He had a two page list of accounts we were to visit in one day. I could not keep up with him then. He had a lot of energy. Speaking for all the friends at Acromag, Bill will be missed. Our thoughts and prayers to the Bill's family and friends.

Bill Hile was a close friend and one of the most admirable men I have known--friendly, warm, loyal, honest and truthful--all the right qualities. He was a mentor and role model to many young people. His memory and legend lives on with them and me. My sympathy to Mary Lou, Diane, and Kirk, who Bill loved.

Mr. Hile was a great businessman who continued to impress me with his self-taught abilities, his compassion for each employee and his vision for the company that he began. He leaves behind a great legacy that I know you are extremely proud of. We will miss him dearly.

Bill Hile was a great inspiration for me
professionally as well as personally. I first met Bill when I worked as a caddy at Carmen Country Club, unlike a lot of members then, he treated me with respect and consideration, who knew I would be working for him 14 years later. He gave me a fantastic opportunity, and I will always think of Bill as the one who gave me a chance and I will never forget. Thanks , Bill. Best regards to the family and friends.
