Charlotte, North Carolina - William J. Long, 84, of Charlotte, passed away peacefully in his home April 4, 2023, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Bronx, NY, he was the son of the late William J. Long, Sr. And Dorothy Maron Long.
William is survived by his loving wife, Sue Garrard Long. Five children; Christine Long, Beth Otto (Dean), Diana Jordan (Jack), Scott Hodges (Pam), and David Hodges (Stacy). Eight Grandchildren; Will Otto (26), Jack Choat (21), Grace Otto (20), Aiden Choat (19), Ella Jordan (18), Skylar Hodges (17), Liam Jordan (13) and Joshua Hodges (12).
William, known as Bill, served with honor in the United States Marine Corp 1957 through 1959. He began his 40-year career in the financial industry on Wall Street in New York and retired in Atlanta, GA. Bill was extremely proud to have served his country and was fiercely patriotic. He was a devoted husband, Father and Grandfather. His greatest joy was spending time with his family. He also loved sports (especially baseball), traveling, fishing, music and of course beer. Bills favorite song "I Did It My Way" is how he lived his life. He will be greatly missed.
A celebration of life service will be held at 11am Saturday, April 8, 2023, in the Chapel at Hankins and Whittington Funeral Service, 1111 East Blvd., Charlotte, NC 28203.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Marines Toys for Tots www.toysfortots.org, or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, www.stjude.org.
