William Shipley Obituary

William "Bill" Shipley

April 14, 1932 - June 27, 2025

Charlotte, North Carolina - William "Bill" Shipley, a visionary entrepreneur, devoted family man, and deeply faithful community leader, passed away peacefully on June 27, 2025, at his home in Charlotte. He was 93.

Born on April 14, 1932, in rural Azalea, North Carolina, Bill's life was shaped by his strong Christian faith and entrepreneurial drive. Known as "Medad" to his family, he often spoke of his humble beginnings and cherished childhood memories.

Bill was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 61 years, Peggy Janice Shipley (2015); their cherished daughter Janice; and his brother, Bruce Shipley.

He is survived by his loving children, Edward Shipley (Laurie), David Shipley, and Holly Devine (Tony). He also leaves behind eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and friends. His granddaughter, Amne Shipley Suman, fondly remembers his "strong sense of faith in God" and "deep love of Memom."

A 1954 Davidson College graduate, Bill quickly rose at Procter & Gamble. He later held leadership roles at National Liberty Marketing and Cordura Marketing Inc., significantly growing their operations. In 1984, he co-founded American Direct Response Corporation (ADRC), building a customer base of over nine million. His entrepreneurial career culminated with Shipley Enterprises, Inc., encompassing Group Direct Marketing (GDM) and Mass Marketing Company of America (MMCA), managing over $40 million in insurance premiums.

Beyond business, Bill served as an Elder of Forest Hill Church and on boards for Youth for Christ International, Stony Brook School, and Fuller Theological Seminary. He was passionate about mentoring, guiding many young men in their faith.

In retirement, Bill enjoyed life at The Cypress of Charlotte, describing it as "like being on a stationary luxury cruise ship." He remained active, volunteering and staying involved with his marketing company.

Bill's legacy is one of sharp intellect, unwavering faith, and a pioneering spirit. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
