"Peetie" Ann Wescott Woodall Davant
December 5, 1928 - March 29, 2023
Charlotte, North Carolina - Ann Wescott Woodall Davant (94), a resident of Aldersgate, died surrounded by her family on March 29, 2023.
Peetie was born on December 5, 1928 to William Ryal and Sally May Tuttle Woodall in Smithfield, NC but spent much of her childhood in Warrenton, NC. Peetie was ahead of her time, a true "Renaissance Woman." After graduating from John Graham High School, she attended Duke University where she was a lifeguard, swimming instructor and member of the Meridian Club, a synchronized swim team. In addition, she taught swimming at various NC camps and was the first Mom and Tots swim instructor at the YWCA in Charlotte. After graduating from Duke in 1951, Peetie served as DCE at Edenton St. Methodist Church, taught school at Oakhurst and Hawthorne (CMS), and completed her Master's degree in Physical Education from Women's College (now UNCG).
In October of 1959, Peetie married Eugene Milburn Davant and left teaching to raise her family. In addition, she volunteered extensively at the Charlotte Nature Museum, Discovery Place, YWCAs, PTAs and Myers Park United Methodist Church. Always keen for an adventure, in 1976, Peetie packed her three children in a camper van and spent a month sightseeing across the United States. The next year, Peetie returned to CMS with the new English as a Second Language program and remained until her retirement in 1997. Never too far from the water, she and her family attended family camp at Camp Seafarer, Arapahoe, NC for over 15 years.
Peetie was predeceased by her husband (2006) and sister, Erin Woodall Tayloe (1995). She is survived by her children; Eugene Milburn Davant, Jr. (Tracey), Ann Woodall Davant Crehore (John) and Wescott Hamilton Davant (Nellie); grandchildren, Conner and Abby Davant, Thomas Crehore and Mary Carlisle Crehore McMahan (Casey), Ella McLeod Davant; her sister-in-law, Anne S. Davant, and eight nieces and nephews.
Known for her quick wit, big straw hats, visits to her Neuse River home and homemade mayonnaise, a celebration of Peetie's life will be held Saturday, May 13 at 11:00 AM, at Myers Park UMC with Rev. Bill Roth presiding. Peetie would want this to be a true celebration, so feel free to wear bright colors, hats and/or your Duke attire. The family will receive friends in Jubilee Hall following the service. The service will be livestreamed at:

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Myers Park UMC (Women's Retreat Scholarship Fund), Duke University (Divinity School, PO Box 90966, Durham, NC 27708) or Guild of Discovery Place, Inc. (c/o Georgia Pressly, 7314 Sardis Rd, Charlotte, NC 28270.)
