Richard Standish Obituary

Richard Lee "Dick" Standish was born May 13, 1944, in Norwich, N.Y., and passed away on Sunday, Aug. 24, 2025.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Wanda Tefft and Glenn Standish; sister, Sandy Loomis; brother, Paul Standish; brother-in-law, Richard Ruh; and nephew, Ryan Ruh.
Dick is survived by his wife of 60 years, Judy Van Vliet Standish; his sons, Michael, Robert (Kim), William (Denyse), and Thomas (Angela); grandchildren, David Goodman (Brittney), Tyler Standish, Shelby Rose Standish, Ashley Barrett (Tim), Richard "Shea" Standish, Alyssa Standish, Sydney Standish, Alyson Standish, Jackson Standish, Peyton Standish and Sophia Grace Standish; great-granddaughter, Addison Goodman; sister, Sharon Standish Parks; brother, Glenn Standish; sister-in-law, Sandra Ruh; brothers-in-law, Philip Van Vliet (Elizabeth) and Gregory Van Vliet; along with many beloved nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at noon on Tuesday, Sept. 2, at St. William Catholic Church, 765 Andrews Road, Murphy, N.C. Inurnment will follow in the St. William Columbarium.
Dick's career spanned 30 years as an electrical engineer with IBM. Following his retirement, he began a second career as a custom home builder in Murphy, N.C., where he constructed numerous homes.
He loved camping with Judy, their grandchildren, family and friends. Each summer, they traveled throughout the National Parks, taking groups of grandchildren with them for more than 25 years. These adventures created treasured memories that will live on in the hearts of his children and grandchildren.
A devoted member of St. William Church, Dick volunteered his time and talents for many years, contributing to remodeling and building projects as part of the construction committee. While raising their boys in Boca Raton, Fla., he coached football and baseball, and was active in Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts.
Dick will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Vincent de Paul, P.O. Box 303, Murphy, NC 28906 to support families in need.
