Anthony Bahl
August 1, 2013
Anthony "Tony" Joseph Bahl, age 72, of Chicago, died peacefully on August 1st after a courageous battle with Mesothelioma surrounded by his daughters, Michele Bahl of Madison, WI, and Amy Lee of Chicago, and son-in-law Brendan Lee. Tony was a dedicated high school English teacher and a steadfast social justice advocate and longtime participant at the College of the Complexes. However, most of all, he was a tremendous friend, father, and grandfather to his two grandchildren, Bella (2) and Dylan (3). Tony touched so many people by his generous and empathetic spirit. Tony is preceded in passing by his late wife Judith (Hutensky) Bahl of Waterbury, CT. In addition to his children and grandchildren, Tony is survived by his siblings Mary Ellen (Jerry) White, Ruth Ann (Richard) Vaske, Virginia (David) Burget, Andrew (Marie) Bahl, and Kathryn (Michael) Shareck. Two sisters, Margaret and Cecilia, preceded Tony in death. A private memorial service will be held in September. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Tony's name to Madison Rafah Sister City Project, P.O. Box 55371, Madison, WI, 53705.

I was a student of Mr Bahl at Clemente High School, 1975 or 1976. He was a fine teacher and have thought about him until I searched the internet. I am 53 yo old now and will continue to remember him as a fine teacher. Thank you. Alberto Trinidad, 2152 N Claremont Ave., Chicago, IL 60647.

I frequently think of Mr. Bahl who was my english teacher in 1976 and 1977. Today, I decided to google him and learned that he had passed. My condolences to his family. I'd like you to know that he had a profound effect on my life and my only regret is that I didn't find a way to stay in touch with him. He was a very special person.

Thank you all for the amazing service. I know that Tony would want Brendan thanked for his full, moving eulogy and for being such a stand up guy and admired son-in-law. Thank you, too, Michelle and Amy. The torch has been passed. Best to all, March Bracken

Dear Amy and Michele and Family,
We have just come from your most extraordinary memorial for Tony. In addition to the beautiful poetry of his family, friend after friend spoke of Tony's character: his magnanimity, his deep intellect, his integrity, his fearlessness. There were tears and there was laughter too. It was a moving afternoon, an unforgettable afternoon, a tribute to a most remarkable man. We feel privileged to have been invited to this memorial and honored to have known Tony.

Michele, my thoughts are with you and your family. I wish I'd known your father - but through what you and others have shared, I know he was a truly remarkable man and he leaves a beautiful legacy in the work he did, the family he loved, and the many lives he touched.

Dinner conversation with Tony ran the gamut from social justice to home repair. Sprinkled in would be sound advice, many laughs and passion throughout. He was a wonderful educator and a committed union man. We will miss his conviction and tenderness.
