Carl Bergquist Obituary

Carl Iver Bergquist, age 90, died on June 8. He had been a resident of Independent Village in Naperville since 2000. Born on November 25, 1913, in Chicago to Gustave and Anna Bergquist, he was one of five children. A graduate of Morgan Park High School, he then attended Wabash College where he played football and baseball and graduated Phi Beta Kappa in 1938. Carl served in the US Army from 1942 to 1945 in the 104th Infantry Division. Decorated with a Purple Heart, he was stationed in Germany during WWII and had been captured at the Battle of Bulge. At Eisenhower High School in Blue Island he taught history and French, coached football and baseball and was Athletic Director. He retired in 1975. Carl is survived by his sister Martha (Albert) Wieringa; sister-in-law Elsie Bergquist; nephews and nieces Bernie Barke, Jim Wieringa, Karen Scuderia, Bonnie Lintz, Wayne Shibley, Cynthia Krainc, David Bergquist, David Miller and Kristin Cicciarelli. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 19, at Union Church of Hinsdale, 137 S. Garfield, Hinsdale, IL.

Carl was my great uncle,brother to my Nanny(Anna).When I think of Carl I remember all of the stories he use to tell me.The stories of this life,teaching,travel and war.He was kind and wise,and I will miss him very much.
