Cary Kerbel Obituary

Cary Barnett Kerbel , 57, of Evanston, passed away May 16 surrounded by his family following a courageous battle with lymphoma. Cary received his Architecture degree from the University of Illinois in 1979 and was a member of the American Institute of Architects. He contributed much to the face of Chicago with his artistic building talents as a visible legacy for all to see. He built single-family homes & award-winning multi-unit buildings throughout Chicago including the Bucktown, Lincoln Park & Edgewater neighborhoods. At the time of his passing, he was near completion of a townhouse project in Ottawa, IL. Cary lived his life with style and passion. He was an elite athlete, having competed in world class Nordic ski races in the U.S., Canada, Sweden, and Switzerland. In summer, Cary was an avid sailor, competing with his father on their boat, KIII, in area races, including numerous Race to Mackinac regattas. When not sailing, he could be found cycling or paddling the local waterways. Cary is survived by his parents, Irving & Violet Kerbel, of Lincolnwood; brothers Darrell (Kathy Zipperer) Kerbel and Michael Kerbel, of Skokie; and sister Kimberly (Michael) Rowe, of Evanston; loving uncle of Elliott and Sydney Kerbel ; and Emma, Jeremy and Annalise Rowe; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins. Visitation Tuesday May 19, 4:00 to 9:00 pm at the Rowe residence, 2019 Colfax St in Evanston. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lymphoma And Leukemia Society, 1311 Mamaroneck Ave Suite 310, White Plains, NY 10605, 914-949-5213, www.lls.org.

My family and I were so lucky to have lived around the corner from Cary and his family in Lincolnwood. We are very sad to hear about Cary. He was such a happy, successful, smart, outgoing, friendly man with the biggest heart. We will always remember him. Our condolences to the Kerbels.

Cary was a sincere, caring and loving son, brother, friend and uncle. He was passionate in everything he did, from his architecture to his sports. He was smart and curious, interested and interesting. Cary was just a great human being. My life was certainly better for knowing Cary, He will be terribly missed.

I was shocked to read about his death- He was always a really nice person, having known him since our grammar school days in Lincolnwood and through HS- I will miss his smiling face and wish his family and close friends comfort.
