Cathy Aldana Obituary

Cathy D. Aldana, 65, died of natural causes on October 28, 2020, at her home in Park Ridge, IL. She was a devoted aunt, daughter, and executive who will be remembered for her work ethic, her generosity, and her love of the arts.

Cathy was born on September 6, 1955, in Portsmouth, VA. In early years, her family lived in Pearl River, NY. She spent most of her childhood in Pennsylvania, where the family skied nearly every weekend in the winter. Besides being a natural athlete, Cathy was also a skilled piano player. As a teenager, her family moved to Illinois. She attended Palatine High School and played on its tennis team.

After graduating from Palatine in 1973, Cathy received her associate degree in legal secretary studies from Harper College and her bachelor's in psychology from Lewis University. In her 20s, she worked as a paralegal for a law firm, while also fulfilling her sense of adventure by obtaining her pilot's license and running the Chicago and New York marathons.

In 1987, Cathy began her long and impressive career in the railway industry, becoming an executive assistant to Edward A. Burkhardt, the CEO of Wisconsin Central Railroad. When Burkhardt left the company in 1999, Cathy joined him in founding a new railroad leasing company called Rail World, Inc.

As the vice president for research and administration, Cathy was integral to the growth and success of Rail World. She worked incredibly hard: frequently traveling abroad to help the company expand its international operations, and even running the New Zealand consulate from her office when Burkhardt was named the country's honorary consul to Chicago.

Though Cathy was extremely dedicated to her career, she will be remembered most fondly as Aunt Wonderful Cathy, or "AWC", to her dear nieces and nephews. She showed them endless care and generosity and could often be spotted at their sporting events and concerts.

Cathy visited friends in nursing homes and spent time with the Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth. She became so close with the nuns, in fact, that they nicknamed her "The Muffin Lady" due to her penchant for bringing them baked goods. She frequently took the nuns into the city to see events or plays, as well.

That was true Cathy: eager to share her love of Chicago's culture with others. She was constantly organizing events and outings, inviting friends (and sometimes strangers!) to join her on everything from a night at the Lyric Opera to a jazz boat tour of Lake Geneva. She relished the city's art, theatre, and music, and was a loyal patron of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Art Institute, and Chicago Botanic Garden.

Above all, Cathy will be remembered as kind and big-hearted. She never hesitated to help or give, whether it was a check so you could fix your car or a spare electric piano so you could learn to play. She tirelessly supported the dreams of others, even when it meant putting her own on hold.

Over the past year, Cathy had finally begun to prepare for retirement planting flowers around her Park Ridge apartment, volunteering at the Grosse Pointe Lighthouse, hitting up estate sales, scheduling a piano recital. We are devastated by the tragic loss of her life and the future she had planned. Our only comfort will be keeping Cathy alive in our hearts: by cherishing each moment, by adoring the arts, and by believing in each other and ourselves.

Cathy is predeceased by her brother, Rick, father, Richard, and mother, Catherine. She is survived by her brothers Jim and Steve, and the nieces and nephews of the family.

Services will be held when it is safe to do so; to be notified when the date is set, please email [email protected]. In lieu of flowers, in-memoriam donations may be made to the Greater Chicago Food Depository or the Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth.

I love her just as much today as when she was with us. She was an example to us all, an example well worth following, but few of us will achieve. We are blessed to have known her.

Cathy and I were both newcomers to Palatine High School in 1971 and graduated in 1973. I was a very shy, introverted girl, but Cathy helped me to come out of my shell with her kindness and humor. Not only was she friendly and fun, but she was also so intelligent and motivated. We lost touch over the years but I never forgot her. Reading here how she touched so many lives does not surprise me. My sympathy to all of Cathy's friends and family. May she rest in peace.

Before having had the pleasure of meeting Cathy for the first of two times, on November 20, 2018, for lunch with Cathy and Ed Burkhardt at a restaurant near their office in Rosemont, Illinois, I had to speak with Cathy a number of times regarding Ed’s purchase of General Motors locomotives for the his railroad in Great Britain, the English, Welsh and Scottish Railway. In every case, Cathy was extremely helpful, as well as so pleasant to speak with!

I had the pleasure of meeting Cathy twice. On November 20, 2018 I had an enjoyable lunch with Cathy and Ed Burkhardt near their office in Rosemont, Illinois. On June 8, 2019, Cathy and Keith White, the owner of the private varnish rail car “Hollywood Beach” and I rode in the “Hollywood Beach” from Chicago Union Station to Carbondale, Illinois and return (coupled to the rear of an Amtrak passenger train). Cathy really enjoyed that trip, and that’s how I want to remember her! I’m certain, like me, that Cathy will be remembered fondly by many!

Cathy and I worked together for 33 years in the railway industry. She was my executive assistant, but much more. She was hard working, incredibly supportive of her colleagues, a real asset to her company in every way. She spent the last 20 years of her career as Vice President of Rail World LLC, working wherever our business interests took us. Our invest ments took us to New Zealand, Australia, the UK, Estonia and Poland, and Cathy quickly became a favorite of our staff in all of those countries. One of our colleagues wrote "you were always the guiding mind of Rail World, but Cathy was its heart and soul." Indeed she was. And she was equally important to her family, being the "Aunt Wonder Cathy" to her nieces and nephews. We miss her deeply, but will carry on as she would expect us to. Godspeed Cathy!

What does one say about such a kind and generous individual. This is the Cathy that so often came through our convent doors with her contagious smile bearing all kinds of goodies or picking up some of us to see a movie, enjoy a concert or witness the Vienna Boys' Choir...never without one of her friends. She was for me that "Muffin Lady", that unheralded Saint that sometimes enters ones life. She came into mine 30 years ago and I was forever enriched by her. When someone dies we pray for them. In the case of Cathy, I think I'd like to pray to her. Thank You, Cathy, for sharing your life with me and with so many others. May you rest in peace. My sympathy goes out to her family and to all her friends who cherished her as much as I did.

I was so so sad to hear of Cathy's passing. We worked together many years ago in Northbrook. At some point in the late 1980s Cathy convinced me to go Skydiving with her, which we did, and which I'll never forget!! That of course was followed up by hot air ballooning a few months later! Cathy daily made my life better with her wonderful spirit and beautiful laugh, as I know she continued to do throughout her life. Blue skies, old friend.

I was blessed to have known Cathy for a few short years as she befriended my Religious Community, and became friends with a friend of mine, enabling me to share in a number of outings over the last few years. I will miss her goodness and her perpetual smile. She will be fondly remembered in thought and prayer.
