Charles Youmans Obituary

Charles Youmans died at home with his wife Susan at his side on July 24, 2022, after a long illness. A dedicated member of the Chicago theatre community for decades, including 30 years as house manager at Lyric Opera, Chuck was known for his capable management style-reflecting his degrees in drama and theatre management. He also served on the administrative team of the British American Drama Academy's Midsummer at Oxford programs at Balliol College, Oxford. Chuck was loved for his winning smile and ability to hold listeners spellbound with his repertoire of stories. While serving as house manager during the run of "Private Lives" at the Shubert Theatre, Richard Burton declared that Chuck was "the best front-of-house man I have ever worked with." Charles is survived by his wife, Susan Kryl, and legions of fans and friends.

Susan, I was lucky to know you and Charlie since 1962. We share longtime memories. Charlie had a wonderful gift of story telling. We all will miss his wit and great smile...

My dear friend, so many years have passed since our teen aged years at Marseilles High School. Although we didn't realize it then, those were good times. We have stayed in touch since those days and I have good memories of meeting you and Susan. I will miss you, and I'll miss not being able to send an email or a note. May God hold you in the palm of His hand throughout eternity. You will always be in my heart; until we can all get together again.
