Always a happy and decent soul that was a quiet but powerful presence for the Class of 1980 of Shaker Heights High School.

I was part of the Wooster in Vienna Program many years ago, the same summer David and Vanessa went and I was saddened to read of his passing in the Wooster magazine. While I did not know him well, I just remember how funny he was and how kind he was to everyone. I just remember sitting in a beer garden, outside Vienna, laughing. That was a good summer. I pray for Vanessa and her three daughters. I went on to have 6 sons and live in Wheaton, IL. Small world. Again, I am so sorry. -Katie English Reinhart '85

I'm so sorry to just be hearing of David's passing now. I was a student of his at US and his love of science and teaching and just generally being a good person was an inspiration to me then and now. My childhood dog (Moses) was from your families litter and I have such fond memories of the dogs playing together and hanging out with Mr Genger. My sincerest condolences to you all, but know that David had a profound impact on my life and will always be remembered.

I was greatly saddened to learn a few days ago from fellow Wooster alums of Dave's passing. I was Dave's roomate at Wooster at Kenarden Lodge and at Slater House. Dave was a great roomate and a one of a kind individual- he possessed a unique and hilarious sense of humor (I credit him with making me a lifelong David Letterman fan). My thoughts and prayers are with Dave's parents, and with Vanessa, Melissa, Coley and Allyson.

Oh my God, I'm in shock. David was a great man and a phenomenal educator. I remember talking with David about his projects and students and he always brought more passion and energy than I ever remember getting from my own teachers, and I had pretty good teachers. My deepest sympathies to Vanessa, Melissa, Coley and Allison. You are in my prayers.

Dave was our favorite junior high teacher, and the single best teacher any of our children knew. He loved teaching science and did it well; he was encouraging, supportive, and wise.In addition, he was a supportive friend to other parents. We were so happy for him when we learned that he would have his own school in Santa Fe and felt it was well-deserved.
We embrace and support his wife and daughters in their journey without him, but are confident they will do well because of their life together.
With love and understanding,
Jeannie, Jim, Jessica, Zach. Chris Barton

Dave was a good friend to Woodlands Academy of the Sacred Heart and to me. He was a passionate educator and a very devoted father. On this Fathers Day, Dave stands as a reminder of what each father is called to be. He remains alive in our hearts.
