David Maenza Obituary

David J. Maenza, age 79, dear father of Patricia Maenza Doherty, and loving grandfather ("Popeye") of Meghan Patricia Doherty and Garrett James Doherty, passed away peacefully at home on April 18, 2013, after a long illness. A professional photographer who was known as a man who "paints with his camera," David traveled the world, capturing some of the most famous landscapes with his unique eye; creating popular posters of great U.S. cities like Chicago, San Francisco, and New Orleans; and immortalizing many great action moments in sports. A proud army veteran, he served as a peacekeeper in Germany in the 1950s. He was a longtime resident of the Newberry Plaza on Chicago's Near North Side and a familiar face in the Rush Street Triangle Park. A memorial for friends and family will be held on Friday, April 26th from 4pm to 7pm at Carmine's 1043 N. Rush Street in Chicago. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations should be made to the Jesse Brown VA Medical Center, Volunteer Services c/o Patrick Gleason, Code 135, 820 S. Damen Avenue, Chicago, IL 60612, with the designation "In Memory of David Maenza to the Dialysis Center."

Still think about fond memories of you coming into Dominick´s with your bright smile, quick wit and breathtaking pictures that you so proudly showed and had every reason to be proud. You were a great customer back then when Dominick´s was still in business but you were a more than great friend! Keep resting in Heaven and I know Heaven is better with you there!

I worked for David way back in the early 70's. My first job out of college and Dave showed me the ropes. Never realized how much I learned from him till long after I had moved on. An incredible individual, creative and funny. My condolences to the entire family.

David, I have always loved you. We met in 1970 in Chicago and were great friends all thru the yrs. We laughed and met in Roma, Italy by accident and everyone there said, "Bravo, Bravo" David you were always my best friend and I will miss you dearly. You took pics of me in Italy and remember Papa Milanos for that great food. Love you David... Darla Dye

May he rest in peace I'm glad I met him. He was such a great guy always made me smile. Just found out recently of his passing. He will be missed by so many that got to know him.

Patti,Meghan and Garrett,I am sorry for your loss.I met David awhile back when he visited my friends Joanne and Dennis. At first our conversation was very formal. However, as the evening progressed, I had David laughing a lot. He then told me that I was his little Mexican Phillis Dillar(hope it was my jokes not my face he was referring to)!I will always remember that.May he be with his loved ones that have gone before him.Thank-you David for that wonderful memory. He is now watching over you all.

So sad to learn of David's passing. I worked as a photographer for Dave in the late 1960's during my college summer seasons. As I recall, some of my pictures are in his famous Old Town poster! One summer, he sent me on a trip around South America to shoot photos. That he could have such faith in a young person showed me what a great person he was. I'm sad I didn't get a chance to say good bye. I was going to call him today after 50 years. I'll miss him terribly.

Dear David, I was very fortunate to get to know you. My family and I will always remember you. We met you during your last year of life but your memory will stay with us for a lifetime. There are very few people in this world who can be simultaneously humble and grandiose. Thank you for sharing with us the light of your heart. Rest in peace.

Dear Uncle David, I hope that you and uncle Joe are happy and together again in a much better place. Catch a lot of fish and when I see you again you can tell me all about it, and don't forget to tell Uncle Joe I am the one that taught you how to fish! Love you Uncle David, will miss you more than you could ever know.

So sad to hear of David's passing. I met David only once on my first ever visit to the US when my friends Jay & Sue organised him to give me a "Nickel tour of Chicago" - I wanted to see speakeasies and gangsters. David turned up wearing a trench coat and fedora and carrying a violin case. After a great night out David presented me with two large prints of his Chicago photos of the sky line at night and day from lakeshore drive. The pictures are still hanging in my home in New Zealand. Thanks David, great memories of an exciting city and a gentleman. Chris Hibbert (previously from London)

It was such an honor and pleasure knowing Mr. Maenza ! He was definately a one of a kind man that readily had something witty to say . Oh David, my friend, I will miss you so much, you were always there for me when others were not. We laughed, we fought, but in the end, 23 years later ,we continued to work side by side. Love and miss you but I will see you one day. but until then, rest my friend. Love, Joanne
