Dennis was an animal keeper at the Brookfield Zoo when I was a curator there in the early 1970s. He worked in the Lion House and we immediately struck it off. He loved the animals, and he was an excellent animal keeper and a team player. I appreciated his upbeat personality and sense of humor. His medic stories from Vietnam were riveting. I also learned that he was a gifted artist. Dennis generated beautiful pen-and-ink artwork for a technical paper I wrote about small cats, and for many years my family cherished one of his prints of Beethoven rising from a cloud of smoke. His mom, who worked for an electronics firm kindly got me a discount on my first hifi set. When we moved to Washington DC, Dennis and a few other keepers helped us pack the trailer, and mashed some fingers in the process, but that didn't stop him. I regret we didn't stay in touch, but I know he moved on to work in the field of art. I remember him with fondness and admiration. He was a special person. My best wishes to Karla.
