George J. Verkinder, age 83, of Sister Lakes, MI, formerly of Chicago. George's life began on Feb. 6, 1924, in Chicago. The son of Camille and Therese (Courreges) Verkinder. He attended school at Fenger High School in Chicago. George served his country in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II and left the service as a sergeant. He was united in marriage to the former Bonnie J. Firth on Jan. 9, 1945, in Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Chicago. He was a self employed painter and decorator in Chicago for many years. The Verkinders moved to their Sister Lakes home in December of 1986 to enjoy retirement. George was a faithful parishioner of Sacred Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Sister Lakes and was an usher for the church. His loving family includes his wife Bonnie of Sister Lakes; children Jacquelyn and her husband Joe Farrell of Cheshire, CT, Judith and her husband Robert Molinaro of Chicago, Pamela and her husband Bernard Heinen of Crestwood, IL, and Deborah and her husband Jim Albano of Crown Point, IN; grandchildren Lisa Olmstead, Sean Farrell, Bernard Heinen Jr., Anthony Molinaro, Michael Farrell, George Heinen, David Molinaro, Justin Albano and Tatti Albano; seven great-grandchildren; one brother Leon and his wife Vollie Verkinder of Hamlet, IN, and several nieces and nephews. George passed away on Monday, Nov. 5, at Lakeland Regional Medical Center in St. Joseph, MI. He is preceded in death by one brother Victor Verkinder. His family will receive friends on Thursday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. (Michigan Time) at McLauchlin-Clark FuneralHome (405 Center St. Dowagiac, MI. 49047), where Deacon Frank Wesolowski will conduct a scripture service at 7:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Father Leo Taubitz on Friday at 11 a.m. (Michigan Time) at Sacred Heart of Mary Catholic Church (29961 Leach Rd. Dowagiac, MI 49047). He will be laid to rest in Sacred Heart of Mary Cemetery. Memorial contributions in George's name may be directed to the Disabled American Veterans. I have so many fond memories of Uncle George: the post Thanksgiving trips to the Museum of Science and Industry; the family poker games and most of all the laughter and stories. Our lives were brighter for having known him and sadder now that he is gone.
