Harry was a mentor, scholar, friend and gentleman. I met him when I was 26 years old. One learns a lot just watching someone execute those roles so well. His example will be missed and remembered by many.
My sincere condolences to Harry's family.

It is my loss that I haven't seen him for a long while but I will remember Harry as one of a handful of people who no one could ever say anything nasty about. There was simply no cause to. Johnny Boyle, bookseller

Grace to your remaining family. That they may find comfort in this time of transition. Assurance, in memories shared, kept eternally in their hearts.

Like everyone else, I was charmed when I met Harry at the Caxton Club in the early 1990s. He was a member from 1966 – 54 years, and Robert McCamant wrote a profile for the Caxtonian 21/6 (June) 7 in which a number of anecdotes are recounted, including this 1996 quote from Harry about operating a retail bookshop and the antiquarian book trade: “The cash flow worries are deeper, the stress level more profound. But the exhilaration of repetitive gambling – buying a book, enhancing its value through personal research, and then re-selling it at a profit – that is a hard-to-beat narcotic.”

A great bookseller in that he always looked at you as a person not simply as a client. My understanding of Harry crystalized when I shared a booth with him at a book fair in California. Dealers came the entire length of the fair to say hello. Sometimes they did business, but that was not so important as just visiting with Harry

Although I haven't seen Harry for a number of years, we talked on the phone occasionally. He was a thoroughly nice guy, and a pleasure to be with. We did practically no business with each other, but over the years we supped together in Chicago, New York, LA, San Francisco, Amsterdam, Cologne, Paris, and he with us here in Sheffield, MA. It was always a great pleasure to be in his company. Our condolences to his family.

Harry was one of the nicest, sweetest people in the trade. His loss, along with Ken's death, are both significant to the trade. I will miss his emails and seeing him when I go to Chicago again.

Harry Stern was a delightful man and an excellent bookseller. I knew him for almost 50 years and always enjoyed his company and his willingness to share his expertise especially on maps and Americana.

I'd known Harry since I entered the antiquarian book trade in 1971. I'm not telling anyone something they don't know, but he was just the sweetest man and colleague I've ever known. He was collegial, curious, knowledgeable, and a mench. Though his voice dimmed, his enthusiasm and energy never did. I have so many memories of him that are flooding over me; in sadness yes, but also in joy of having them and in having him in my own soul. May his memory be for a blessing.

Harry was a long time family friend , one of four boys who lived on the corner of Burton and Astor. We were 3 boys who lived a half a block away on Astor street. Harry was always a gentleman, well read , well intentioned and well spoken. Heras always interested in others and unlike many , he listened. Very rare qualities that we need today more than ever.
