Howard Cohen Obituary

Howard M. Cohen, born June 20, 1944, passed away December 22, 2022. Married for 55 years, the beloved husband of Jerilyn "Jeri" Cohen. Proud father of Richard (Jocelyn) Cohen of Northbook, Illinois and Debbie (Dan) Rosler of Pleasanton, California; loving grandfather of Ally and Charlotte Cohen, and Jake and Ethan Rosler. Devoted son of the late Jack Cohen and the late Lee Cohen; cherished brother of the late Martin (Linda) Cohen and Sonny (Rena) Cohen. Beloved brother-in-law of Susan Sack; treasured uncle, cousin, counselor and friend to many. A lifelong resident of the Chicago area, Howard graduated Niles High School in 1962 and received his undergraduate degree in English from the University of Michigan in 1966 and his law degree from Northwestern University in 1969. Howard started his legal career working as an associate at McDermott Will and Emery. In the early 1970's, he joined Much Shelist where he specialized in estate planning, tax, corporate and real estate law for almost 30 years. In January 2000, Howard joined together with several lawyers from various large firms as the lead partner to form a new firm where he continued to practice for the next 22 years before retiring earlier this year. Howard was an active participant in many organizations including serving as the third president of Congregation B'nai Tikvah in Deerfield, Illinois, and as a member of the boards of directors at Twin Orchard Country Club, Anshe Emet Synagogue and the Mayfair Condominium Association. In his leisure time, Howard was a dedicated golfer, lover of movies and avid Chicago sports fan. He was a highly skilled duplicate bridge player and enjoyed travelling around the world. Most of all, Howard loved spending time with his family and friends. Howard's funeral will be held on Monday, December 26th at 12 noon at Chicago Jewish Funerals - Skokie Chapel, 8851 Skokie Blvd. in Skokie, Illinois. Interment Shalom. I am so sorry to hear of Howard's passing. He was truly a special person. As a traveller, myself, I could listen to him talk about his travel adventures for hours...what an incredible life he lived. He also spent most of our training sessions talking about his wonderful family and how his grandchildren were doing, in academia and sports. I will truly miss the time I was able to spend with him. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

I was an associate who worked for Howard and then a law partner of his in the mid-1990's. He was a great teacher, a kind man with a great wit and sense of humor. He generously provided me with many professional opportunities which I will always appreciate. I'm so sorry to hear of his passing. I will miss him very much.
