Howard Lipton Obituary

Howard Lee Lipton, M.D., 81, Professor of Neurology & Microbiology who spent his career researching and treating patients with multiple sclerosis, passed away on Saturday. Born in 1939, Howard was raised in Omaha, NE, and attended the University of Nebraska for college and medical school, and Johns Hopkins University for his residency and fellowship. After serving as a Green Beret in the Vietnam War, he practiced neurovirology at Northwestern University, Evanston Hospital and University of Illinois at Chicago, and was Chairman of Neurology at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York. He lived in Highland Park, IL with his wife of 54 years, Pam, née Rosen, where they raised three sons, Joey, Bobby and Chad. Howard will be missed for his loving embrace, generosity of spirit, intellectual curiosity, and enthralling, if not long, stories. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather, who loved academic pursuits, cultural endeavors, flying Cessnas, and the Chicago Cubs. Howard will be greatly missed by his friends and family, including his wife, sons, four grandchildren (Levi, Isaac, Xander and Pia), and sister Elise. There will be no shiva but a memorial service will be held in the near future. Contributions may be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.

I worked in Dr Lipton´s lab as an undergrad back in late 1990s. Wonderful role model to an aspiring medical student. Great atmosphere in the lab as well and I find myself often thinking of the people Dr. Lipton brought together. I am very sad to hear of his passing.

To the Lipton Family
I just learned of Howard´s death and am so saddened for you.

Howard took time to do an act of kindness for me when I was a student in Steve Miller´s lab. I was in the lab when I learned that my younger sister had been killed by a man in a car who was fleeing from the police. As I was leaving the lab, Howard came in and told me that he called in a prescription for something to help me sleep. He said it was for only 5 pills but that he suspected I would need some help sleeping.

Howard didn´t know me well, but he took the time to think of what he could do to help me. That act of kindness was 35 years ago, and it brings tears to my eyes as I write this.

I have often told others of his kindness when they wonder how to help others. Not everyone can call in a prescription but there are simple acts of kindness that each one of us can do for others.

May he rest in peace.

I considered Howard both as esteemed colleague and good friend. Together we battle in the field of MS research and care for patients living with MS. His caring, sense of humor and inquisitive nature and fairness are a blessing for all of us who had the opportunity to know him. I only wish I have more years knwing and working in the field with him.

Howard did some of his neurovirology training with me at Johns Hopkins. we remained friends and colleagues for many years, sharing scientific interests and also with many friends in common. As a scientist Howard was remarkable for his commitment to one model infection, Theiler's virus of mice. His science went very deep and provided an important understanding how a virus could cause persistent neurological disease. Therefore his work will constitute an important contribution to the universe of persistent virus infections. For this, and for his generosity in science, we will remember him always.

To all his family I extend condolences and prayers for strength at your time of loss. It's nearly 50 years since Dr. Lipton put up with my bunch at Northwestern Medical School, but I remember him very well and fondly. His skills were superior, his ability to work with patients and families superb, and his kindness and patience with rock-headed med students and his residents and fellows made the rocky road less of a harsh journey for many of us. Again, my condolences to you all and my thanks to Dr. Lipton for all he did to help me and my fellow students in the formative time of our careers.
