Irwin Williger Obituary

Born in Chicago 4/13/1913, died at home 3/3/2015, predeceased by siblings Helen Williger Golb, Victor and Jules Williger. Married his high school sweetheart Elinore Zanger (deceased 1987). Attended Roosevelt HS, U of I Champaign, U of I College of Medicine. Did surgery residency in Knoxville TN, worked for Peabody Coal Company, running their hospital in Harlan, KY. Joined the Army as a flight surgeon, WW II, later returned to Chicago to work at Franklin Blvd, Weiss, and Holy Family hospitals. Avid needlepointer, created a cushion for a chair in Blair House, President's guest home; won multiple awards for his work including one from Princess Grace of Monaco. Survived by daughter Susan Sidell (Steven), sons Richard Wills and Arthur Williger, grandchildren Darren Williger, Robert Williger (Yael), Jason Sidell (Dawn), Leah Gannaway (Adam), Ellyn Sidell (partner Tommy), great grandchildren Maya and Zachary Williger, and companion Margery Waldner. A celebration of his long, wonderful life will be held on Sunday June 14, 2015 at 1 p.m. at the Levy Senior Center in Evanston IL. He requested donations be made to Midwest Palliative & Hospice CareCenter, 2050 Claire Ct, Glenview IL, 60025.

My sincere condolences on Irv's passing. I met him the first day I practiced at Holy Family 36 years ago. He was always smiling and always had a good word for those around him. We have lost a true gentleman.
