Here are some pictures of Jack on his Camp Highlands Ranger adventures. Coincidentally I just came across these! Such great times!

I just learned of Jack's passing. He was a great friend to me when I moved to Chicago in 1983. We remained close until I moved to Cleveland for a job change in 1987.
Funny, intelligent and love for life ... that was the Jack I will always remember.
His devotion to Michigan football was epic. I remember watching with him Auburn play Michigan in a 1983 Bowl Game. It was tight till the end. When Auburn won on a late field goal ... well, it was a tough loss for my dear old friend.
I'll never forget Jack.
My belated condolences to his mother who was as welcoming as Jack to this naive, immature Southerner lost in a strange new world of the North Shore.
I'll be cheering for Michigan tonight and remembering Jack.

On behalf of Camp Highlands and the Bachmann family, we send the Smart family our sincere condolences. I personally was seeking Jack out for a reunion of his fellow 1977 staff members this summer. I am so sorry to see this. Jack was one of my heroes as a boy. I remember him with great fondness. Your description brought back vivid memories of one heck of a great guy! His CH peers are finding out about this as I have shared it, and the response is universal sadness. I wish he had had the opportunity to come back home to Highlands for our alumni week - Friends and Family. Maybe the rest of the family can come and remember him this summer.
