JAMES BOROWITZ Obituary

James Borowitz, age 81, died peacefully on Saturday, July 31, 2010 at his home in Wilmington, DE, surrounded by his family. Born in Chicago, he was the son of the late David and Anne Borowitz. A graduate of the University of Chicago Lab School and the University of Chicago, he continued his education at the Conservatoire Nationale Supérieure de Musique in Paris where he studied with Mlle. Nadia Boulanger. Jim remained passionately involved in music throughout his life both as an amateur performer and as an involved patron of music organizations in the Chicago area including the Ravinia Festival, Chamber Music Chicago, and the Pilgrim Chamber Players. In addition to his devotion to music, he was an avid photographer, traveler, and lifelong dog-lover. Many people enjoyed Jim's friendliness, warmth, and sense of humor including co-members of the Birchwood Tennis Club, the Arts Club, the Cliff Dwellers Club, and the Union League Club. He overcame the obstacle of cerebral palsy to enjoy many outdoor activities with his family including tennis, bike riding, hiking and cross-country skiing in Aspen, and canoeing in Florida where he spent the last fifteen winters. The many chapters of Jim's business career include his stewardship of the Bradley Manufacturing Company established by his father David, his participation in the newly-founded Troubled Company Practice at Arthur Andersen, his partnership with Ralph Gidwitz in Financial Capital, and finally his role as Executive in Residence at DePaul University. Jim is survived by his wife of 58 years, Dolores Tabin Borowitz; his brother Albert I. Borowitz of Cleveland, OH; his two daughters and their families: Barbara and Jeff Garland and their daughter Sarah of Wilmington, DE; and Katherine Borowitz and John Turturro and their sons Amedeo and Diego of Brooklyn, NY. A memorial service will be held at Congregation Solel, 1301 Clavey Road, Highland Park on Tuesday, August 17, 2010 at 11 a.m. Donations in Jim's memory may be made to the Borowitz Memorial Scholarship fund at DePaul University, DePaul University Advancement Office, 1 E. Jackson Blvd., Chicago, IL 60604 or to the Ravinia Festival, 418 Sheridan Rd., Highland Park, IL 60035. Messages of condolence may be sent to www.mccreryfuneralhome.com

It's been decades since I saw Jimmy, but I can picture him vividly. Laurie, Kathy, and Bobbie, you have my heartfelt sympathy (and my apologies if I've misspelled your names).

Some of my most treasured childhood memories are the Ridge Road sing-a-longs with Jim at the piano. Along with Kathy and 'Bobbie' and other neighborhood kids I sang, trying to match Jim's enthusiastic playing. It simply couldn't be done. Best wishes to the family.

Lori dear,
I will miss Jim's smiling face at the CSO.......we go back a long, long way....he was the same wonderful man in his later years as he was a young man at the Lab School. My sympathy to you and your family

The entire Duboe family sends prayers, thoughts and well wishes to Delores and to all of Jimmy's family. We will miss his warmth, great intelligence, creativity and enthusiasm and great sense of humor that I hold fond memories of in our childhood years. He will be very much missed by the Coopermans as well. He is probably watching from above and laughing with our late, great Uncle Miles at this very moment! May the good Lord grant peace to Jimmy and his loved ones.

The few times we spent with Jim were so special. He knew so much about so many things. We enjoyed his delightful sense of humor. We are thinking of you all and are very saddened with the news.

I remember Jim very well as my Dad worked for Dave at Bradley.

Karen and I truly valued our relationship with Jim. I use the term relationship because Jim was much more to me (us) than a business partner and dear friend. We miss him dearly.
