Jerome Green Obituary

Dr. Jerome G. Green passed away this morning, leaving his family and community with a wonderful legacy of integrity, generosity and healing. He was born on April 23, 1920, in Chicago. His parents, Jacob and Hannah, were immigrants from Russia and Lithuania who raised Jerome and his brothers Willard and Harold and his sister Bernice to value integrity, family, service to others, education and social justice, and to respect the traditions and values of Judaism. They survived the challenges of the Great Depression, and Jerome, while

attending Marshall High School in Chicago, met the love of his life, Sonia Yanofsky. Together they attended University of Illinois where they became engaged. Jerome enrolled in the University of Illinois School of Medicine in an accelerated program designed to fill the critical shortage of physicians needed for World War 2 service. Sonia and Jerome were married on December 27, 1942 and he graduated medical school in 1944 with his first child Gabrielle in attendance. He performed his internship at the U.S. Naval Hospital in Schoemaker, CA. He immediately was shipped out to the Pacific on the aircraft carrier Ticonderoga where he served as the ship's physician and surgeon as they entered combat zones. Although still a "wet behind the ears" doctor, in the following months he performed dozens of surgeries and emergency treatment for over a thousand crew and officers, often with an anatomy book open. While in the Pacific, his son Barth was born in a naval hospital in California. After the war ended, the family moved back to Chicago where he began his 40-year career as a family physician and surgeon in the South Side of Chicago. He served on the staff of numerous hospitals and volunteered as a Professor on the teaching faculty of the Departments of Family Medicine of Rush University and Loyola University in Chicago. He volunteered extensively in inner-city clinics serving his less fortunate neighbors in Chicago. He was a voracious reader and ardent student who continued to achieve advanced training and board certifications throughout his career. As a pioneer in medical hypnotism, he delivered hundreds of babies in the 1960's and 70's using this technique. He lectured locally and nationally on hypnotism for childbirth and smoking cessation. He was a loyal Chicago Bears fan but loved all Chicago teams and sports and later adopted the Miami Dolphins, Heat,

Marlins and Hurricanes after his move to Miami in 1985. He had a love of the water and had the first large outboard engine on Lake Michigan in 1955, and he enjoyed sailing and motorboating in the Great Lakes and the waters of Florida and the Caribbean. He became a member of the Coast Guard Reserve and spent countless hours patrolling the waters of South Florida with his Coast Guard buddies. He and his wife traveled across North America in a motor home and cruised around the world on freighters pursuing their passion for travel and knowledge. He founded, and with his family has sustained, the Sonia Green House in Port Au Prince, Haiti, serving disabled children and adults. This facility was created in honor of his beloved wife and soulmate, educator Sonia, who preceded him in death. They were both committed lifelong to social justice and community service, a legacy which has been carried on by his children Gabrielle Braman (Robert), Barth Green (Kathy) and Dana Green (Thomas Clancy) and six grandchildren, he fondly called his "6 Js": Julie Braman Kane (Jeffrey), Joshua Braman, Dr. Jeremy Green, Dr. Jared Green, Jess Clancy and Jenna Green. His most recent gift and joy came when he was blessed with 3 great-grandchildren, Jonah, Annie and Sophie Kane. His longtime patient and dear friend June Lassandrello made his recent years quite special with her amazing warmth and loyalty. Finally, "Bumps" was a loyal supporter of the Miami Project to Cure Paralysis and Shake-A-Leg Miami and Project Medishare for Haiti. Any gifts or donations should be directed to one of his favorite charities in lieu of flowers. Graveside services will be held at Lakeside Memorial Park, Miami. Guests wishing to join the family for shiva are welcome Sunday evening at the home of Dr. Barth and Kathy Green. Thank you, "The Green Team" (305) 948-9900

Sincere sympathies to the Green Family.

Dr. Green was our family doctor when my six siblings and I were growing up. I have fond memories of his gentle bedside manner. Dr. Green was also very kind to my parents.

I never had the honor of meeting Dr. Green personally, but his reputation carried a long way. His name was well-known to me as a fine physician, a true pioneer of medicine, and an example to us all. For a new physician such as myself, it is inspiring to see the legacy that a life well lived can create. Like Dr. Green, my father was also an obstetrician, so I can see that the loss of such an accomplished master of the art is a loss to us all, and to his family in particular. May I, and all my colleagues, be sufficiently brave and resourceful to try and follow his example.

My deepest condolences on the loss of your father. He was a good man as evidenced by the life that he led, children that he raised, and example that he set. I was amazed reading his obituary. May your time of sadness be tempered by fond memories of your wonderful father. Peace, old friend.

Bumps,

Thank you for a life well lived. The measure of a man is not what he takes, but what he leaves behind. The legacy that you and Sonia have left behind in the form of your children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren certainly make the world a much better place.

Calm seas and favorable winds.

All our love,
