Joan Bokum

Joan Johnson Bokum 88, passed away on Friday, July 4, 2014 in Oak Park, IL. She was born in Chicago, Illinois to Charles Wallace Johnson and Ella Fulton Johnson. Joan grew up with her sister Angeline in both Chicago, Illinois and Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. She attended Chicago Latin School, for 12 years and Pine Manor Junior College. Joan married John Borden Bokum in 1948 and had three sons; Norris, John and Charles. Joan raised her three sons in Woodstock, IL over a 20 year period. After helping her husband manage Quinta Land and Cattle Company in Three Forks, Montana for six years. Joan and John moved to Santa Fe in 1976. Joan worked at the Santa Fe Country Store for seventeen years becoming head buyer for the final ten years. Since retiring she has volunteered as a member of The Woman's Board of the School of American Research and the Museum of New Mexico. She was a docent at The Folk Art Museum for 16 years. Joan also volunteered at Hospice and the Salizar Elementary School. Throughout her life Joan was an enthusiastic sports woman. She was an avid sailor and golfer but her greatest athletic passion was tennis which she played through her 80th year. Joan was equally passionate about the arts; loving the opera, classical music, Jazz, and the visual arts. Survivors include: Norris Bokum , his wife Tracy Malloy of Norwich, VT and their five children, Ira, Harper, Toby, Sarah and Emma; John Bokum Jr., his wife Margret Andler of Oak Park, IL and their four children John III, Heidi, Zachary his wife Amanda their children Ethan and Arianna and Trevor; and Charles and his wife Carol Bokum of Billings, MT. A memorial service will be held at the chapel of Graceland Cemetery, 4001 N. Clark St., Chicago, IL at 11 a.m. on July 16, 2014. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Joan's name to an animal shelter in your community, or the Santa Fe Animal Shelter, 100 Ceja Del Rio Rd., Santa Fe, NM 84501.
