John Beggan Obituary

John Francis Beggan age 80 of Wilmette. Beloved husband of Mary Lou Beggan nee Hoffer; loving father of Ann (Blair) Subry and Tom (Deborah) Beggan; proud grandfather of Hunter Subry. John was born and raised in Watertown, Wisconsin. He graduated from the University of Notre Dame with a bachelor of philosophy degree in commerce in 1957 and the University of Notre Dame Law School, class of 1960. On August 22, 1959 he married Mary Lou Hoffer, also from Watertown, Wisconsin. John began his career in Washington DC working in the Tax Division of the US Justice Department. Five years later he and Mary Lou moved to Chicago where they raised their family and he practiced corporate tax law at the firm of Gardner, Carton and Douglas for over 30 years. An avid Notre Dame fan, John rarely missed a home football game and traveled the country to cheer on his beloved Irish. When not cheering on Notre Dame, John could be found on the third base line at Wrigley Field rooting for the Cubs. Sundays in the fall found him in the family room cheering for the Green Bay Packers. John enjoyed golf and curling as a member of Indian Hill Club in Winnetka for many years. He was a man of great intelligence, integrity, and humor. Usually a man of few words, John captivated his audience when they gathered around him to hear him share stories. John was a wonderful friend to all. His family meant the world to him. He was a caring and providing husband, father, and grandfather, who with a smile on his face and a twinkle in his eye, will truly be missed. The loss of John is felt by all who knew him...a gentleman of integrity, humor, wit, and loyalty to family and friends. These are all traits undoubtedly honed by his many years along the third base line watching the Cubs and during those "down" years for Notre Dame. Heartfelt sympathy to Mary Lou, Tom, Ann, and the family.

Ann and Family,

This was read at my mom's burial service in 1996. I still find it comforting so many years later. Hope you will too.

Do Not Stand at my Grave and Weep

Do not stand at my grave and weep,
I am not there, I do not sleep.

I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glint on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the gentle autumn rain.

When you wake in the morning hush,
I am the swift, uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circling flight.
I am the soft starlight at night.

Do not stand at my grave and weep.
I am not there, I do not sleep.
Do not stand at my grave and cry.
I am not there, I did not die!

Mary Lou, JB was truly a great man and I echo the familiar sentiments in the guest book: he was truly a gentleman who treated everyone with kindness and respect. I know that he and Tom are up there discussing the Irish recruiting and the future of ND football. Joe Brennan

One of my most cherished memories of my godfather John Beggan was when I graduated college. He told me how proud my parents would be of me. This meant a lot, as they'd both been dead for a number of years, and I had few other family members left.
Kevin and I hope that the family can rejoice in the thought that he has safely reached his heavenly home.
