Captain Jack was a great man.
We worked together on the Star of Chicago. He was the ship's captain, and I was one of the restaurant managers while I was in medical school.
He recommended me for the US Navy Scholarship program for medical school, and I was awarded the Health Professions Scholarship Program (HPSP), probably because he had recommended me.
I served in the US Navy for 12 years after that and loved every minute. The Navy is a great life.
What a kind man. He graced us with his presence and attended our wedding at the Drake Hotel in 2002.
He will be missed, and I will remember him in my stories.
It was my honor to have known him.

I just had to say something about Capt Day (as I will always know him). I first met him when he and the Manatra I visited the Great Lakes Training Center in 1963/64. I was a young sailor (E-2) going to school there. He invited me to ride the Manatra back to Chicago which I did. I became a regular crewman and stayed with Capt Day and his mother every weekend that I did not have duty. I became part of their family. I went to church with them and visited their family in and around Chicago. They were wonderful people. When the Manatra went out, I went along as the helmsman. I did this for the period that I was stationed in Great Lakes. After that the Captain, sometimes with his mother, came to my wedding in Baltimore; and then when I went to Purdue and graduated, he commissioned me as an Ensign in the US Navy. He invited my wife and I to the USS Chicago commissioning ceremony in Norfolk which my son helped out with the logistics. I last saw Capt Day in 2013 when my wife and I were passing through Chicago on our way from Milwaukee back to our home in Florida. So I guess I have known him for over 55 years. He is one of the most influential people in my life; and although we have not been in touch much over the past 40 years I will miss him, but I will always remember our last meeting when he was 94 and he took my wife and I to lunch and we reminisced about our times together on the Manatra I. If anyone remembers those days, please drop me a line (email: [email protected]). RIP dear Capt. [Jack] Day.

We lived across street on Wallace Dr, from 1983-2000, he was best neighbor we've had in our lives. Enjoyed him raising the USA flag in am & taking down in evening. We joined him on the Odyssey where he brought our toddlers to Captains quarters. He was so kind, wish we never moved.

Jack Day was a superb leader. Jack exemplified being a Captain and I will always be proud to have sailed with him on Manatra and other vessels.

Jack was a great friend and influence for me and my children. Many fond memories from my tour at the Navy Office of Information, Midwest. Jack was a active member of the USS CHICAGO (SSN 721) Commissioning Committee and maintained his connection to the submarine and its crew to the very end. Fair winds and following seas, Captain.
