John Fenzel Obituary

In the heart of Chicago, IL, a city renowned for its grit and grandeur, John Fenzel, Jr. began his 91-year journey, a remarkable tale of dedication and love that concluded peacefully on January 6, 2024.

From his early days at Marmion Military Academy to his time at Johns Hopkins University, John was not just a student but a leader, serving as the top cadet (battalion commander) at both institutions. His mantra, "Be the best, what else is there?" was more than a phrase; it was a guiding principle that he instilled in his family and friends. A giant in stature and in spirit, with hands as large as his heart, John was a towering figure in the lives of all who knew him. He inspired through his own example.

As a First Lieutenant in the United States Army, John exemplified dedication and leadership, traits he carried into his business life. John's path wasn't linear; after a promise of employment from Chrysler fell through post-service, he demonstrated the same values he would inspire in scores of others. Persevering after the job fell through, he finally landed an opportunity with Dodge. As a new District Sales Manager, he opened 26 new dealerships across Iowa and Illinois before choosing to rejoin his father's business at Fenzel Motor Sales in Hampshire, IL, continuing what would ultimately prove to be a 75-year legacy of excellence. His leadership of the dealership, culminated in its recognition as the nation's top Chrysler, Dodge, and Jeep dealer in its final year.

Fenzel Motor Sales was more than a place to buy a car; it was where stories were shared, and friendships were formed. Customers often dropped by, not for a test drive, but for the sheer pleasure of John's company and his captivating stories. If a customer found themselves in distress, he wouldn't hesitate to brave a winter blizzard to come to their aid.

His beloved wife, Muriel Donovan Fenzel, was his partner in both life and adventure. Together, they traveled the globe, from the rolling hills of Tuscany to the vibrant streets of Vietnam, their love and companionship turning each destination into a cherished memory. Their four children, COL John (Ciri) Fenzel III (USA, Ret.), Mark (Zane) Fenzel, LTG Michael (Lisa) Fenzel, Lisa (Mike) Zehring and their 13 grandchildren are a testament to the love and values they shared. John is survived by his wife, Muriel, and his sisters, Rose Arnold and Mary Jane Solomon. John's parents, John and Florence, and his sister Joanne preceded him in death.

A famed storyteller, John could weave a yarn like no other. Whether regaling tales of being a paperboy in a World War II POW Camp, or recounting the charming story of how he met Muriel on a bunk bed in Sun Valley, Idaho, John's narratives were always heartwarming and unforgettable. His love for history, his country, the Catholic Church, and yes, even Waffle House, spoke volumes about the man he was -always curious and unwavering in his faith.

"Play it cool in the motor pool!" John would often remark as he'd say goodbye, his voice a familiar and comforting presence. His life was not just about grand achievements but also about making everyday interactions meaningful and personal.

John Fenzel, Jr.'s life was a symphony of stories, extraordinary achievements, and love-a legacy as enduring as the profound memories he created. He will be profoundly missed, yet his legacy endures. As he would challenge us now, "Be all you can be, Troops!"

John was a great man. I met him when I was delivering radiators to his dealership when I was just 16 years old. I worked for my dad in our small radiator business on Voss Road just north of Hampshire about 5 miles. John was always smiling and kind. He treated me with respect as just a young girl. This is why my parents and I choose Fenzel Motor Sales as the place to buy my first car after college. My parents have since passed, but if they were here today they would venture to Hampshire to pay tribute to John. Sending love to the family during this difficult time.

John will always have a special place in my heart. The master storyteller got to tell me many stories that I had missed about my father since he passed away and a younger age. I always enjoyed bringing pies for the holidays for him and his family and I´m more recent years I was bringing meals for John and Muriele and of course enjoyed more stories that were so fun I will miss him sending hugs to all his family Becky Weaver

John was an extraordinary man. He
Was a good business man, a great friend of the family and an all around great human being. We grew up on Jefferson St. in Hampshire one block away from the dealership. John was well known all over northern Illinois. When my stepfather passed away, John made sure my mother was treated like family when it came to her cars. I remember John always calling me "my boy" as he greeted me on the street. My condolences to John´s family. Thomas Hicks Sycamore IL.

We lived across the street from the Fenzel´s in Sleepy Hollow many decades ago. My oldest, Michelle, and Lisa were good friends. John spent long hours at the dealership in Hampshire so his presence in our neighborhood was felt, even though he wasn´t home much. Always had a smile and looked fit enough to still be in the service. Muriel it´s hard to believe we´re now spending more time looking back on our lives than forward. We have been blessed with wonderful families and now so many warm memories. May this warm your heart in thankfulness as you mourn the loss of your life partner.
