John inspired me to go into education with a simple question the summer after my junior year in college. He asked, if I ever thought about going into education. My initial answer was no because I had never considered it. He commented that he thought I would be good at it. After graduating from college, I thought about that conversation and decided to explore the idea. I spent 30+ years in education as a teacher, principal, assistant superintendent and superintendent. It was all because he asked the question. He was an inspiration! Phil Collins, Class of 1982

John and I went to high
school together. Because of height we set together. HE WAS MY MENTOR TO JOIN THE CHRISTIAN BROTHERS BUT I PULLED OUT AND DID NOT JOIN HIM. I WILL PRAY FOR HIM AS HE WAS THE MOST DEDICATED PERSON I EVER TALKED WITH.

Maureen and family, I offer my condolences on your great loss. John (Pat) and I ministered together at O'Dea High School in Seattle, WA. We became good friends and traveled together across the country. We stayed with my sister in St. Paul, a time that also gave John a chance to show me the neighborhood in which he grew up.
John was a good man and very fair in his dealing with others. Someone once asked me "What's he like." I said, "What you see is what you get." There were no two or more sides to John. He was friendly, upbeat and optimistic.

I remember when John was principal and he would come to the secretaries Christmas party no matter where it was being held. He would buy us all a round of drinks. Rest in peace.

Maureen and McGraw family:
My sympathy and prayers at the passing of a great colleague. I knew John for only these past few years as a professor at Lewis University and the University of St. Francis. What a wonderful co-worker and friend he has been. John was dedicated to the preparation of successful future and current school administrators, a worthy and important vocation.
Rest in peace.

After attending the seminary my freshman year, the school closed. It was my desire to continue my education at O'Dea. My parents and I were granted an interview with Br McGraw about 1 week after school had started and after the interview, he let me enroll. I remember how caring and understanding he was to my situation and my desire to attend O'Dea. He respected my vocation and supported me in my personal faith formation - several times we spent entire lunch periods talking about faith, service, and what it was to be and live Catholic. O'Dea was the right school for me and I will always be grateful to him for letting me attend. He was a good man and I'm saddened to hear of his passing. May his soul rest in peace.

My prayers and condolences to the Dunne-McGraw family. John will be truly missed. He was always so very cordial to me and I treasured the time with John when he was principal at Brother Rice. A classy man, a mentor, a friend, a confidant are just a few of his attributes. May God bless his soul.

John was very kind and supportive to me as a fellow colleague and administrator. When I was Principal of St. Laurence, we were both members of an IHSA committee and he would go out of his way to make sure that as one of the few representatives of the private sector, my voice was heard. He also asked me when I was principal of Brother Rice to take in a Tinley Park student for a week so that the young man could graduate (the youngster had violated some policy). The young man was very nice and I made sure to visit with him every day and ask how things were going. I did that as a favor for John, but I was the one who felt that John had done a favor for me!
He was a good man.
My sincere thoughts and prayers are extended to the McGraw Family.
