John Simpson Obituary

John Douglas Simpson died peacefully at home on Saturday morning, Nov. 27, 2021, in Glenview, Ill., after celebrating Thanksgiving Day surrounded by family. Born in Washington, D.C., on Dec. 7, 1934, Mr. Simpson lived in Evanston, Ill., for most of his life. He graduated from Lincolnwood, Haven and Evanston Township High School, where he met his wife of 65 years, the late-Marilyn Colleen Simpson (nee Powers). He attended school at Iowa State University, and later, DePaul University, earning a J.D., after completing night school, while enjoying being a new father. Mr. Simpson was a member of the Hill and Simpson Law firm for 43 years and served as Managing Partner for 26 years. He learned German to work with European clients and was admitted to practice before the German Court. He made more than 300 transatlantic trips to Europe for work and many other flights to Asia. He marched through Evanston for civil rights and for equal housing during the 1960s in addition to co-drafting Evanston's Open Housing Ordinance. Mr. Simpson is survived by his children: Jeffrey (Alberta), Douglas (Stacy Moser), Janet (Michael Malone, DO) and Diane Simpson, and Laura Andrews; grandchildren, Chelsea (Jaron) Mulder, Matthew (McKenna) Simpson, Katelyn Malone, Alexis and Jonathan Bundy, and Jessica Andrews; and great-grandchildren, Evelyn "Evie" Mulder, and John "Jax," Finnegan "Finny" and Fiona Simpson. Edward LEHMAN

My father who was an intellectual property lawyer admitted to the USPTO and the Illinois Bar was a long time law partner and contemporary to Mr. Simpson. They both were at the firm 43 years. As a teenager I worked part time as a youth (along with his son Doug Simpson) at the Hill Simpson law firm, well before I became a lawyer. Mr. Simpson was very kind, patient, and was encouraging. He was one reason I became a lawyer at all. When my father passed away in 2003, Mr. Simpson was kind enough to eulogize him. He was a good man. On behalf of the Lehman family condolences to the Simpson clan.
