John Norbert Tierney

1943 - 2021

April 26, 1943 - August 3, 2021. John grew up in South Shore. He graduated from St. Ignatius H.S. ('61); Holy Cross College ('65); & University of Chicago Law School ('68). John left his successful Chicago law practice to serve a 30-year tenure as President & CEO of the advertising firm "Dick Orkin's Radio Ranch". In 1979, he & the Radio Ranch moved to Los Angeles. John also had a diverse law practice including civil rights, real estate & entertainment. He proudly served on the Pitzer College Board of Trustees. In his free time, John could be found in Griffith Park hiking/bicycling with friends, relaxing at a Russian bath house, or out on the open road on his motorcycle. His Fox Hunting equestrian prowess earned him a "Master of the Hunt' designation. He was a consummate host, always welcoming & engaging. He was also a voracious reader, gifted writer & storyteller. John will be remembered for his love of family, his kind & generous spirit, quick wit & larger than life personality. He is survived by his daughters, Katherine Tierney, MD (Jeff Lester), Rebecca Tierney, & Hannah Tierney (Jason Shrier); his son Marcus (Athena) Sherman; six grandchildren (& one on the way); his sister Margaret "Peg" (Lawrence) Beaudin; twin brother James M. (Suzanne Savoie) Tierney; many nieces & nephews; & his former wives Ann Hopkins & Therese Geary Council. He was preceded in death by his eldest daughter, Moira, his sister, Mary, & his parents Cyril W. Tierney & Margaret Fanning Tierney. Memorial donations can be made in his honor to Friends of the L.A. River (folar.org) & Friends of Griffith Park (Friendsofgriffithpark.org). A memorial service in Griffith Park will be held at a future date.
