Jonathan Gordon Obituary

Jonathan Eri Gordon, 51, of Chicago, died on Friday, December 9, 2022, surrounded by his family. Jon was a 1990 graduate of Glenbrook North High School in Northbrook where he was a star of the cross country and track teams. His success on the track earned him a scholarship to Northern Michigan University where he was a member of the NMU cross country and track teams. After graduating with an accounting degree in 1995, he attended Florida Coastal Law School in Jacksonville, Florida, earning his J.D. in 1999. While he loved working in law, his real passion was always cross country and track. He began a career in coaching while in Jacksonville at St. John's High School from 1999 to 2001. His success at St. John's earned him a position on the cross country and track coaching staff at the University of Chicago from 2002 to 2005. While still with the University of Chicago, he took on the head coaching duties of the both the boys' and girls' cross country and track teams at Chicago's Northside College Prep in 2004. He spent 13 seasons at Northside, starting with just six athletes, and building a city powerhouse with hundreds of athletes, regularly winning the city title, conference and placing strong in the state championships. From Northside, he moved on to Chicago's Marist High School in 2017, again taking an underperforming program and building another winner, in 2021 winning the Catholic League Championship and becoming the Catholic Coach of the Year. Jon could train anyone who had the courage to become a distance runner and worked hard to do so, obtaining scholarships for close to 100 athletes. The young people loved him, he loved them back. Jon had an immense passion for coaching high schoolers. He taught hundreds of kids how to believe in themselves and achieve success. At Marist, he loved his kids, his coaching staff and the administration. Jon is survived by his parents (Ret.) Justice Robert E. Gordon and Marilyn Statland Gordon; his brothers Anthony (Lisa), Lawrence (Ronna), his sister Lori Kenzel (Hal), and numerous nieces and nephews.

Service Wednesday, 12 Noon, at The Chapel, 8851 Skokie Blvd., Skokie (at Niles Center Rd.). The service will be livestreamed on Jon's webpage at www.goldmanfuneralgroup.com. Interment Shalom Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Marist High School, www.marist.net/support-marist/donate-now/ Info: The Goldman Funeral Group (847) 478-1600.

Thinking of Jon today. I met him as a student athlete at Glenbrook North High School. Then later our paths crosses as he coached his high school teams running at Niles West HS. He was a very kind and generous man and always did the best for his student athletes. May he rest in peace.

Jon was my room mate at NMU, living at 309 Center in Marquette, we ran XC as team mates. It was a house of team mates-Jon was driven to be the best runner he could be. Gone too soon, RIP Jon.

My condolences to the Gordon family. I was an assistant track and field coach at Northside Prep for two years under Jon. In all my many years of coaching I have never met a more dedicated, loyal coach. He truly had the well-being of all his athletes foremost in his mind. The world of high school athletics needs more coaches like Coach Gordon. He will be sorely missed.

I was fortunate enough to be coached by Jon Gordon at Northside College Prep from 2007-2011. Some favorite memories would include winning regional and city cross country championships, trips to Peoria for meets, and some of the pasta parties you could imagine! He truly was a great source of knowledge about the sport and a fixture in the NCP and CPS communities throughout his tenure. I´ll always have fond memories of coach and the impact he had on my and other young runners lives. Peace be to his memory and condolences to the Gordon family for he will be missed.

As the father of one of Jon´s athletes and a lifelong runner myself, I have never seen a more inspiring, dedicated, and caring coach in my life. The lessons he taught and encouragement he gave will be with all those he coached for their entire lives. May he rest in peace. Dave Ullrich.

My sincere condolences to the Gordon family. My son met Coach Gordon on freshman orientation day at Northside College Prep, and he recruited him on the spot to the cross country team even though my son had never gone for a run a day in his life. That changed the course of my son´s life, from feeling successful when he devoted himself to something, to getting in shape and being healthy, to meeting a diverse and accepting community of runners, to making friends for life. Multiply that by the thousands of lives of young runners and coaches and you can imagine the positive, selfless impact Coach Gordon had. While Coach Gordon is gone, his spirit and impact endure.

The news of Jon's passing is immensely sad and hard to put into words because of the impact he has had on my life.

I met Jon during my freshman year of high-school where he convinced me to try out for the Northside Cross Country team. The whole team and I could see right away how selfless of a man he was as he poured his heart and time into the team over the years. How Jon juggled work, life, and the team is beyond me but he figured out a way to do it and he made it look so effortless.

Jon leading the boys team to a city championship my senior year and regional championship my junior year was such an epic feeling and are memories that I will keep with me forever. Jon's famous pasta parties over the years was another fun memory because it brought the students so much closer together and showed us how cross country did not have to be 100% intensity and serious every day and could also be a way to connect with others.

Because of Jon, I went onto to run in college where I met all of my lifelong friends and this summer I just got back from attending one my best friend's wedding who I met on the cross country team - all of this would not have been possible without Jon convincing me that one day my freshman year to join cross country.

Over the years I always wanted to email him to let him know how strong of an impact he has had on my life and it brings me to tears knowing I will not be able to tell him this anymore but Im sure he knew this already.

To his family - thank you for raising such a great and kind person He was nothing but positivity in this world and I will remember him, his ethics, and his lessons for the rest of my life.

Dearest Marilyn and Bob,
So sorry for your tremendous loss.
I so remember Jon as a little boy, kind and sweet, and active and hearing about him from you as he grew up and especially while he was in Jacksonville attending college and graduate school and how much he loved coaching.
I was so moved by today's service, especially by Tony's loving thoughts and by Lori (as beautiful as ever) relaying their conversations and his positive attitude during his hospital stay.
My deepest condolences to both of you, & to Larry, Lori, and Tony.
Lovingly,
Renée

Dear Marilyn and Justice Gordon,
I met Jonathan while working for Justice Freeman many years ago. While Jonathan was working as an attorney, it was not hard to know his true passion. The walls of his office were covered with articles about track and field, inviting questions about his work as a coach. We only have to look at the notes in this book to know it was work well done. He left a legacy of athletes, coaches, and friends who knew him to be a kind and compassionate person who truly cared for the athletes in his programs and set them up for success. May the memories you cherish of him and the reminders of his living legacy bring you comfort and peace. Sincere condolences upon the loss of a loved son.

I have known Jon since he was a student athlete at Glenbrook North HS. I have followed his illustrious career as a coach. Every year at the "Savage" Cross Country Invite at Niles West he would tell me that he still has the plaque he won back when he was running for GBN. I admired Jon and his work ethic. Jon was a great role model for all his student athletes. Jon will be missed by many as his life was cut so short. Sending condolences and prayers to and for his family. Coach Pat Savage

Coach Gordon´s love of running and coaching style was such a positive influence on our son. We loved the way he always brought the team together. It always brought tears to my eyes when Coach would bring his own parents to the team banquets at the end of each season. You could see how much he loved his parents and how proud he was of them. Condolences to his family and loved ones.
