Dr.Amato saved my son“s life when he was 5 months old. He was diagnosed with a double aortic arc, known as vascular rings. The aorta was wrapped in a knot around his airway causing an auditory stridor and continuous bronchitis and pneumonia since birth. Extremely rare., few cases across the country every year.We had a blessing ,that sent us this angelic man to help our son, when others could not.He repaired it ,without causing any residual cardiac effect. My son is a teacher and has a wonderful life because of Dr. Amato. He not only took care of him medically, he made sure our young family would be ok financially as well. The surgery was 6 hours long, and very costly from the hospital, anesthesia and ICU bills. On our second visit the "hefty" bill was gone. Dr. Amato went out of his way to "negotiate our bill, to what the insurance allowed".He only stayed at Schneider Children Hospital for a few years, We were so blessed to have had the opportunity for this remarkable man heal our son. Thirty two years later and I still Thank God for sending him to us.

Dr. Amato was the best! A very special breed of doctors! He just wanted nothing but the best care for his patients and that is what he gave them. He took the best care of our son while he was at Rush Hospital and we will never forget him or his kindness!

I found this memorial for Dr. Amato quite by accident, as I was trying to find info on the now closed United Hospital in Newark, NJ and this page came up in the search. I'm so glad I stumbled upon it.
Dr. Amato was the surgeon who corrected both an atrial septal defect and a "hole" in my mitral valve when I was 5 years old and again when I was 13 years old. Thanks to his tremendous skill, I am alive today. I'm grateful for the great gift that God gave Dr. Amato so that the many children he operated on during his career can live full, adult lives today (for me, nearly 40 years ago).

Dr. Amato performed cardiac surgery on me back when I was a 12 year old when he worked at Newark Childerns hospital in NJ. I didn't know him personally but eternally grateful. I went on to become a doctor myself and he was certainly one of the people who inspired me to pursue Medicine.

I had the honor of working for this brilliant man at United Childrens Hospital in Newark New Jersey. His love and compassion for children was so amazing. He also saved the life of a very close friends daughter with serious heart disease. She is now 32 years old and living a normal life. Rest in peace you were a good man with a passion for your career. Dear Amato family,

I stumbled across this obituary and was saddened by the news. Dr. Amato performed open heart surgery on my son at Rush in Chicago in 2000. I am happy to say my son is doing well today and starting college in the fall. My son's plan is to be a cardiothoracic surgeon and I believe this is based on the great doctors like Dr. Amato who provided his care. I only knew him for a short time, but will forever be grateful to him, i only wish my son had the chance o meet him.

Our deepest condolences to you and your family as I can only imagine what a huge loss this was for your family and to the world.

Forever in our HEARTS.

A man dedicated to saving so many lives. He performed open heart surgery (mustard) on my daughter in 1986, Newark, NJ. The hospital would have a Valentines Party each year and when Dr. Amato would appear, it was as though the Pope had entered the room! He had a wonderful spirit and presence and was a gift to us all. My sincere condolences to his family and friends.

To The Amato Family,
My heartfelt condolences to all. Joe was a great doctor, more importantly, a great man. He was special. Joe was my brother's doctor when he was practicing in Boston.. Andrew could not be saved however, Joe did everything humanly & humanely possible to keep him alive.... But God had other plans. He passed away at 20 years old after 31 days in a coma. My brother, at the time, was a pre-med student at Harvard Univ., and preparing for medical school. Joe was there day and night, not just as his physician, but as a friend. I and my family will be eternally grateful to him. He was consoling, empathic, supportive and totally involved with Andrew's well-being. I learned many things that were inspired by Joe in those 31 days... Despite his mastery in surgery, he humbled himself in the eyes of God. He would say in Italian,"I will do whatever I can , but the rest is in the hands of God". When said you could feel his spiritual belief that God was the master planner, and his talents were God-given. I believe Joe was an angel sent by God. His kind of true dedication to medicine and humanity was very rare. He not only healed hearts, but touched many hearts as well; and I'm positive that where he is now, he is guiding and shining down on his family. His spirit lives on in all the hearts he touched. He "made a difference". I once heard, in a sermon, "God's gift to mankind is life...our gift in return is what we do with it. Joe accomplished his gift through his genuine dedication and love of healing. My prayers for strength and peace are with his loved ones. . Sempre Brillare Giuseppe
