Leonard Cerullo Obituary

Dr. Leonard John Cerullo, a world-renowned neurosurgeon who pioneered the use of lasers in neurosurgery, passed away on Tuesday January 16 2024 at the age of 79.

Dr. Cerullo was born in Hazleton, Pennsylvania on June 8, 1944. He was the middle child of Leonard F and Marion Cerullo (Yori). He attended local public schools, graduating from Hazleton High School where he was elected class president in June 1962. He then attended Georgetown University where he graduated with a bachelor's degree in English Literature in June 1966. He spent the following summer studying Japanese literature in Tokyo. He began his medical career at the Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia where he graduated with a medical doctorate in 1970. He served a mixed medical internship at Chicago Wesley Memorial Hospital (now Northwestern Memorial), then returned to Philadelphia to serve an internship in General Surgery under the guidance of his mentor Dr. R. K. Jones. There he met, courted, and married Cheryl Lee Weir, his wife of 52 years. They returned to Chicago and Northwestern where he continued his neurosurgical training under Dr. Paul Bucy and Dr. Anthony Raimondi among others. In July 1972 he continued his residency in Neurological Surgery, serving fellowships in skull-based surgery at the University of Paris and in interventional neuroradiology at Columbia University in New York. In 1977 he was awarded an MS in surgery at Northwestern, and in 1979 he completed his neurosurgical training. He returned from the U.S. Army Reserves at the rank of captain in 1979, having served for eight years.

He and Cheryl were blessed with three children; twin girls in 1979 (Katherine "Katie" and Lauren) and another daughter in 1981 (Whitney.) Katie passed away in 2007 and is greatly missed by all. Lauren is a dermatologist in Northwest Indiana, where she lives with her husband Dr. Mohamed Farhat and their two children Leo (10) and Zoe (8). Whitney has her master's degree in yoga studies from Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles and currently resides in Buda, TX with her husband Danny Atkinson and their two dogs.

Dr. Cerullo served on the faculty at Northwestern University Medical School, later becoming Acting Chief of Neurosurgery from 1984-1986. In 1987 he founded the Chicago Institute of Neurosurgery and Neuroresearch (CINN) which would become an internationally renowned center of excellence. A visionary and pioneer in the use of lasers in neurosurgery, Dr. Cerullo's hospital was the second hospital in the United States of acquire a gamma knife. In the late 1990's he became chairman of neurosurgery at Rush Medical Center. In 2003 he founded the Neurological and Orthopedic Institute in Chicago, following the model of CINN. Dr. Cerullo was a member of several neurosurgical organizations, a fellow of the American Society of Surgery, and past president of the American Society of Laser Medicine and Surgery.

Dr. Cerullo's gentle demeanor, profound intelligence, and exemplary surgical skills have touched the lives of patients from all over the world. He was an avid equestrian, a self-taught gourmet chef, and a connoisseur of food and wine. He will be greatly missed. A private memorial service will be held. Just saw Dr Cerullos obituary this morning! I was his patient at CINN in 1990! I suffered a slight stroke at 29 years old & lost my short-term memory & eye-hand coordination. Due to a Left-sided Occipital Arteriovenous Malformation.I was one of the first 500 people in the USA to trial the Gamma Knife! I will be forever grateful to Dr Cerullo for giving me my life back!I am 63 years old now.Gods Blessings to Dr Cerullos family! Psalm 27

My deepest sympathy to Dr. Cerullo’s family. I’m so sad to just see this.
The world has very few people that even come close to Dr. Cerullo. In 1986, my mother, Maria Chiaro age 52, was diagnosed with a spinal cord tumor at a local hospital. They opened up her back, from below her neck all the way down. They closed her up and her neurosurgeon told us that she was going to be paralyzed and there would be no way that her tumor could ever be removed. Thank God, a family friend recommended that we see
Dr. Cerullo. Dr. Cerullo performed a 9 hour surgery. Within days my mom was able to walk perfectly! She lived to be 84 and was also so grateful to Dr. Cerullo. May you rest in paradise, Sir. I will never forget your kindness and what you did for my mom and family.

Dear Cheryl and Family, I was so deeply sorry to learn of your loss. Lenny was such a special human being and his insight and kindness were instrumental in launching me into my medical career. Forty years ago, when his office was on Saint Clair, he sublet a sliver of his space to me so that I could open my dermatology practice when I completed my Residency at Northwestern!
In later years, Lenny oversaw my successful care for a ruptured cervical disc with his then innovative "aggressive conservative care".
Loved and admired by so many for his medical expertise, his kindness and of course his cooking, he will be remembered and deeply missed. Sending love and prayers for your comfort,

My thoughts and prayers to the family of Dr. Cerullo. He was my mother´s surgeon and cared for her for many years. Then he became my doctor years later when I had a schwannoma in my spine. Dr. Cerullo moved swiftly once I was diagnosis and I was in surgery in about a week later. He told me he was grateful I kept searching for what was wrong and said if I hadn´t I would
have been paralyzed within 6 months. Your husband and father was such a talented and famous surgeon but he also was a very kind and compassionate man. May he Rest in Peace!! He did so much good for so many people and he will never be forgotten!! With sympathy, Karen Fugarino

I´m so sorry. I just found out about this today August 2 . Lenny and I first met when he was a Senior Neurosurgical Resident at Northwestern and I was a junior Neurology resident. When I started in practice in 1981 in Kankakee Illinois an hour south of Chicago we had essentially no neurosurgical coverage. I remembered Lenny( who could forget) and he became the neurosurgeon for Kankakee. I would call anytime and he would say bring them up no questions asked. When my wife was his patient once I couldn´t help but notice half the patients on the floor were from Kankakee. So I literally have thousands of stories. One I will share was a young woman who had a seizure shortly after delivering a baby. The CT ( all we had back then) came back as a stroke but I thought it was a tumor and transferred her to Lenny who removed her mentions. That was the case that was featured in the Chicago Tribune I believe also Life magazine and eventually the Readers Digest that brought Lenny and his team more into the public eye. So long Buddy you did good.

I met Dr. Cerullo in 1996 when I had a pituitary tumor. Local doctors said I would need surgery but Dr. Cerullo said if my prolactin level was high, it was a prolactinoma and could be treated with drugs! And that's what it was! He also led me to seek a regular doctor for untreated high blood pressure. What a brilliant man who served mankind in the best possible way. I'm happy to have crossed paths with him and am so sorry he passed too soon. Blessings to all of his relatives. You have much to be proud of!

SP sorry to hear that this great man has moved on. He saved me from unnecessary cervical and spinal surgery on more than one occasion. His remark: "We treat the patient, not the MRI" spared me and twenty years later I am still on just a watch, now through Mayo Clinic since specialists here in the midwest prefer to operate. You will always be a hero to me, Dr. Cerullo.

Our son Simon, age 12 was diagnosed with a bleed in his brain in 1989. Dr. Cerullo was recommended through a friend and when he viewed the Cat Scans he called us to say he was 99.9 peercent certain it was an AVM deep down in Simon's brain. Dr. Cerullo carried out the surgery and repaired the malformation and gave us back our son. He even took time out to bandage Simon's head before his first school basketball game after surgery and stayed in the building to watch him play. We will always be grateful to him. Our prayers and thoughts are with his family.

I had the pleasure of knowing Dr. Cerullo when I was a teacher in River Forest, IL. I had Katie in both junior kindergarten and first grade and found her to be an exceptional child. Both Dr. Cerullo and his wife were always gracious to me and I felt honored to be invited to their house for lunch. Dr. Cerullo also came to my first grade classroom and talked to my class about the human brain. What a wonderful man! I know that he was a great teacher who will be missed by many.

In 1983 Dr. Cerullo performed brain surgery on my father. Our family was very worried how it would turn out. And then Dr Cerullo came into the surgical waiting room with a big smile on his face, and we were relieved before he even said anything. What a presence he had. Thank you Dr. Cerullo.

I will always be grateful for Dr. Cerullo and the team at Columbus Hospital CINN. I was diagnosed with a large brain tumor 4 weeks after the birth of our second son. Our older son was two years old. I felt like the whole staff rallied around a young mother who desperately wanted and needed to recover to raise her kids and see them grow up.
I believe Dr. Cerullo saved my life and was instrumental in caring for me so I could put it all behind us and move forward and lead a productive happy life. He would always get a kick out of when I told him my mom prayed for him every day in thanksgiving for his expertise and for God to give him strength so he could help other people.
Sending my deepest sympathy to the Cerullo family and deep thanks for the wonderful nuerosurgeon that he was A genuine life saver.

In 1983, my first job out of nursing school was at Northwestern. Dr. Cerullo was in the lounge talking on the the phone with his children. In the kindest, most fatherly way, he said he loved them and missed them. In June of 1985, my Mother suffered a brain aneurysm rupture. She was rushed to a local hospital and given last rites. We found out about Dr Cerullo through a friend, and made contact with his team . Even under the most dire circumstances , he accepted her as a patient, and gave her unprecedented ( in our experience) care. She became stable enough to undergo surgery using the Gamma Knife , and it was a great success. She is alive today , only because of Dr Cerullo. I´m sure there are thousands of these stories, but wanted to let you know that our family has prayed for him daily since we met, and how very, very saddened we were to hear of his passing. Thank you to his family for sharing such a great man with all of his very fortunate patients.

My heart is heavy.

I met Dr. Cerullo, first as a patient,
and then socially at Philander´s, in
1981 and 1983, respectively.

Dr. Cerullo shared with me that I was his first patient that he used laser surgery to repair a dislocated
C3, C4, C5 neck injury. I was awestruck with his simple, yet commanding demeanor in his attempt to explain the procedure.

I was truly honored to meet Dr.Cerullo, again, this time socially
at Philander´s. I introduced myself
and he readily shared with the group that I was his first patient
that he used laser surgery to repair
my injury. My friends were extremely impressed with this world renowned surgeon and the
ease withwhich he interacted with
everyone present.

I feel honored to have known Dr.
Cerullo. He truly embraced life and
everyone and everything he encountered.

My condolences to the Cerullo family, he was extraordinary.

Fondly,
Nancy Hart

Len treated everyone, not just his patients, with compassion and respect; he had an amazing sense of humor.
When a childhood friend of my husband´s was diagnosed with a brain tumor, I reached out to Len. The friend was living in Fort Wayne, Indiana and Len was in Chicago; but Len contacted the surgeon to consult and offer his expertise
After successful surgery, Len called me at home on Christmas Eve to deliver the good news himself. That´s the kind of person he was. I will never forget his kindness.
He was an amazing person with an amazing family. I was so lucky to be considered a friend.

A great sense of humor and his huge capacity to love.
He adored Cheryl and his girls.

He would bring me recipes. A few times
he would go in the kitchen and show my cooks how to make something.

A magnificent man. He was a friend, and an incredible doctor. He would see patients that other doctors gave up on.
People, I never met would call me and ask if I could get them an appointment with Len. Twice, he removed brain tumors for people that other Surgeons wouldn´t. He gave these people an extra year or two of life. I brought family and friends to him and he saved them from getting unnecessary surgery. He was a great diagnostician. A lover of food he´d bring recipes to my restaurant, Philander´s, and I´d have the kitchen staff prepare the dish for him. Once,I let him cook in Philander´s. I have so many fond memories of Len.
What I thought highest of him was his capacity to love.
He adored Cheryl and his girls.

Rest in Peace, Dr. Leonard Cerullo
We recently received the sad news that Whitney, one of our cherished adopters, has lost her father, Dr. Cerullo. He was a distinguished neurosurgeon, renowned for his pioneering work in incorporating lasers into neurosurgical procedures. Whitney generously connected us with her father when I needed insights on brain tumors and radiation treatments for my personal dogs. Dr. Cerullo was not only immensely knowledgeable but also kind, generous, and always willing to help. It was truly an honor to have known him and benefited from his expertise. During this challenging time, my thoughts and heartfelt prayers are with Whitney and her family as they mourn this significant loss.
