Mary Powell Obituary

Mary Chace Powell (Midge), age 89, passed away peacefully on December 18th, 2021 surrounded by her family. She will be dearly missed by her husband of 64 years, William L. Powell, her children Mary (Timothy), Bill (Jennifer) and Sally (Wilbert), and her eight grandchildren: Richie (Arica), Stephen and Mary Adelaide Nelson; Pamela, Nina and Sam Powell; and William and Lydia Steentjes. Midge was born in Evanston on April 28, 1932 and grew up in Winnetka. She attended Winnetka public schools and was a proud graduate of the North Shore Country Day School class of 1949. It was the enduring friendship with her fellow "49er's" that served as a bedrock of love throughout her life. After graduating from Sweet Briar College in 1953, Midge returned to Chicago working for the Northern Trust Co. and Leo Burnett Co. After raising her children, Midge returned to professional life as a Realtor working for Jean Wright Real Estate for over 25 years. A lifelong resident of the North Shore, Midge was passionate about her Winnetka community with Christ Church being a pillar of that community. It was at Christ Church where she and Bill were married in 1957 and where she taught Sunday school and served on the Altar Guild for many years. A friend to all, Midge was happiest helping others. She will be remembered for her kind heart and generous spirit, welcoming the less fortunate and those in need into our family and life. A passionate volunteer, Midge was a member of Northwestern Settlement, Junior League of Evanston-North Shore, Horizon Hospice, the Garden Guild of Winnetka, and served on the Winnetka Plan Commission. Her many other passions included world traveling, gardening, and golden retrievers. She also loved golf, winning several Women's Championships at Indian Hill Club and her beloved Wausaukee Club in Northern Wisconsin. The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Evanston Hospital especially Dr. Amy Wang, the nurses of 5 South Searle, the compassionate and dedicated nurses at McGaw Care Center who lovingly cared for Midge in her last days, and all of the wonderful staff members of Highlands Assisted Living who surrounded Midge with love. A memorial service is planned for May 2022. Donations in Midge's memory may be made to North Shore Country Day School (https://www.nscds.org). Info: donnellanfuneral.com

Our deepest condolences to Mr. Powell and the entire Powell Family. I will remember Mrs. Powell's smiling face and her willingness to always help at the Garden Club talks we were invited to speak at.
Since we were close neighbors, we would chance to see her with her beloved Goldens. She will be missed.
Love and prayers.
