Michael Perlow Obituary

On May 4, 2023, the much beloved Michael Perlow died peacefully surrounded by his immediate family. He is survived by his loving family including his wife Sandra Perlow, his son Lloyd Perlow (Kate Thomas), his daughter Julie Perlow, his son-in-law Eric Greene, grandchildren, Katelyn Perlow, Andrew Perlow, Noah Greene, Jared Greene, step grandson Henry Bonzak, sister Judith Mack, and brother Mark Perlow. Michael and Sandra's young family grew up in Wilmette, Illinois where he was very much involved in the community, especially the Wilmette Little League Baseball Association.

Michael received his bachelor's degree at the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a major in business. Michael made dear, life-long friends at the University of Wisconsin many through the Pi Lambda Phi fraternity. After graduating from the University of Wisconsin Michael went on to Northwestern University Law School, where he received his juris doctorate. Midway through law school Michael took a one-year break enlisting in the U.S. Army, where he was stationed in Ft. Worth, Texas.

Michael began his career as a lawyer, but was soon redirected to his original passion, the stock market. He began as a stockbroker at Omni Management and within a few years had established his lifelong business Westwood Management Corporation, where he was an investment manager. He grew the practice by working hard, constantly reading, attending daily company meetings, and most importantly establishing friendships and relationships inside and outside the Chicago business community. Large wealth individuals seemed to come to Michael by word of mouth, friendships, and civic engagement in the City of Chicago. He was known as a brilliant stock picker and a man of integrity. Michael's employees at Westwood, Peter Goldman, Cindy Moody, and Donna Milas were devoted to him and Westwood as he was to them, which also made Westwood Management a successful company.

While he found great joy and passion in his work, he also had many outside lifelong pursuits. He was actively involved in numerous social justice organizations including, the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), the U.S. Holocaust Museum and the Illinois Holocaust Museum, along with the Jewish United Fund. Over the years he held several Board positions at the ADL. He also generously devoted time mentoring and fostering relationships with the younger members involved in these organizations.

Michael, along with his wife Sandra, who is a professional artist and art teacher, had a keen interest in cultural activities and the arts, enjoying art museums, plays, movies, and the opera. In his spare time, he was an avid reader of newspapers, enjoyed reading history, and going to live sports events, especially baseball games.

Michael was dedicated to his family and got great pleasure out of spending time with his children and grandchildren, taking many family trips together.

For many, what they will remember most profoundly about Michael was his keen interest in the lives of other people. He listened intently and remembered with great accuracy the details of people's lives. He cared about the well-being of others and showed generosity and kindness, mentoring and encouraging younger generations to pursue their interests and dreams. He will be greatly missed by many.

Service Monday, 10:30 a.m. CT at Anshe Emet Synagogue, 3751 N. Broadway, Chicago. The service will be livestreamed on Michael's webpage at www.goldmanfuneralgroup.com. Oh Sandra and family, I am just now - and very belatedly- learning of Michael´s passing. The world has lost a wonderful man. He generously shared his knowledge with me over so many years. It´s hard to imagine a world without him. I am so sorry for this great loss.

I had the privilege of knowing Mr. Perlow through my father, Mel Mongerson. One summer while working with my father, Mr. Perlow asked me to attend lunches for public companies. I recall one lunch where the company reps actually brought the filters they manufactured. The length of one went around the room! (A photograph would have been better!) During the same meeting, one person fell asleep. (I cannot image why.) Afterward, I updated Mr. Perlow by describing the above. His reply, "Hmm..the stock sounds like a dog." Years later, after taking over my parent's art gallery, I would talk to Mr. Perlow now and then about art. He told me, "I pick stock the same why I pick art...I buy what I like." I will miss him!

Michael was very generous and thoughtful. He always wanted to know my opinion even though he had 50+ years more experience than I did. I know his skill as an investor, friend, and mentor will impact me the rest of my life. I am grateful for getting to know him.

We will remember Michael Perlow as a great Chicago original, an unselfish, kind and utterly unpretentious man. An xample of his simple approach to life: He rode the bus to work every day even in his advanced years.
He was the son of a prestigious vascular surgeon at the Michael Reese Hospital; Michael would proudly show his father's painting which was lovingly preserved in his home. Michael was devoted to his wife Sandra, a professor of art for over 20 years at the Columbia College. Together they were unstinting patrons of the arts and other charities. They collected and supported many Chicago artists and advanced their careers. Michael was a highly cultured man, analytical, professional, and of the highest integrity. We will miss this man without artifice, a good father and grandfather, inquisitive, sensitive and full of generosity.

Michael was one of my mentors in my early days
on Lasalle St., starting in the early 80s. I´ll never forget watching the Bears Super Bowl parade from the 3d floor at 208 S Lasalle. We both had such a great time. He was a real mensch and I will

Sandra -- We're so sorry to hear of Michael's death -- seems like he was part of our family forever. It's hard to think of words for you that aren't trite, but please know that we are thinking of you. He was a faunae man. His father was revered in LA, and I'm sure he was very proud of both of you.

My condolences to the Perlow family. I considered Mike as my mentor in the investment business as I patterned my business after his. I worked for Mike in 1978-79 and again as an independent consultant from 2006-2010. He was always very supportive of me both personally and professionally. When my mother passed away a couple of months ago he called me and sent me a nice note. I will miss his counsel and his kindness.
