It is with great sorrow that we express our deepest sympathy to Ann and all of Mike Scanlon´s family & friends for your enormous loss. Mike was a gem of a man, a wonderfully kind soul that was always available for a chat or a helping hand. Mike was very well situated, being surrounded by his lovely & angelic wife, Ann, as well as their kind & loving children. Being around Mike and the Scanlon family was similar to coming in from a blustery winter´s day into a cozy warm cottage with smiling faces, a crackling fire, melodic music and a hot mug of tea.
Mike of the Scanlon´s was an instrumental force with the Limerick Hurling Club and the G.A.A. in Chicago, which spanned decades. He was persistently dedicated on forging ahead to elevate these prestigious organizations to new and awesome heights. Mike & Ann´s contributions were enormous throughout the decades as was their fondness of both Cork & Limerick! Looking back, the Scanlon home was always a flurry of excitement & activity throughout the Summer Hurling Seasons, as was many of our homes, as we accommodated the new and exciting talent of Hurlers, fresh from Ireland.
The conversation was always lively, passionate and routinely quite comical around Mike. I recall many of those conversations between Mike, my father Paddy, and many of the other club members. It was pure entertainment as a young lad to witness the banter back & forth with the big smiles on their faces.
Mike was always in his element every Sunday throughout the Summer months as the lads donned the Green & White of Limerick. As if that was not exciting enough, the real "action" began with the legendary celebrations and get-togethers immediately following the Hurling matches. Those were glorious days back in the 1960´s-1980´s (Pre-Gaelic Park). Mike had continued to remain active throughout the years but in a more relaxed capacity. It was always welcoming to see Mike Scanlon & Mike Keating´s smiling faces working the entrance gate at Gaelic Park.
One of the finest stages that Mike routinely made his presence on was none other than Sears at Harlem & North. Mike was a refreshing and prominent fixture there as he worked the desk with pure eloquence and magic. The staff enjoyed working with him and the customers were delighted with Mike´s honesty, integrity and an enjoyable anecdote. Mike was extremely knowledgeable and accommodating to the customers as he presented them with premier customer service, which naturally kept them consistently returning back. It was a privilege to have worked with Mike back in 1983.
May Mike´s next journey be as exciting and fulfilling as this last sojourn. We will miss you here and look forward to meeting up again in the not too distant future. All the Best, Mike and thanks for your generosity, great work, diligent efforts and many laughs...You will always be fondly remembered by many!
