Michael Sturgill Obituary

We celebrate the life of Dr. Michael Eugene Sturgill who passed away on October 15, 2019 in Chicago. He is survived by his five children, Ryan, Eric, Kyra, Stella, and Haley; his father, Eugene; and his siblings Jerry, Rob, David, Kelly, and Julie. Michael was a father who inspired in his children a love of the American West, wild rivers, adventure, and most of all, cherishing diversity, urbanism, and caring for those who were less fortunate. He cared deeply for Chicago's poor and those who fell through the cracks of America's healthcare and social welfare system. As a leading neurosurgeon at Mount Sinai and other Chicago-area hospitals, he helped countless patients over the years recover from trauma and live full lives that otherwise would have been taken from them. He was much loved and will be missed. May his soul rest in peace. A private service will be held at a later date. If you have anecdotes about Michael's life or messages you would like to share with Michael's family, please send to Michael's personal tribute website at www.foranfuneralhome.com

My heart goes out to The Sturgill Family. Dr. M. Sturgill, was my Dr., if it wasn't for him finding something in my MRI, I would not be here. I was in serch of my medical records, I looked up his name, I am in complete shock. He will be truly missed. RIP Dr. M. Sturgill.

While I did not know Dr. Sturgill, I am a friend of his son who I know loved and admired him so much. The words used to describe Dr. Sturgill (selflessness, integrity, dedication) are all words I'd use to describe Ryan as well. I'm comforted to know that Dr. Sturgill's wonderful qualities and character will live on in his children and grandson. Sending love and light to the Sturgill family during this difficult time.

To my dear nephew, Mike:
I was 10 when you were born. I felt like you and Jerry were my little brothers. I loved helping your Mom take care of you. I even got to rock you and whisper in your ear that I loved you. When you lived on the farm you learned to swim in a swimming hole. The next summer, we were water skiing double and you tried to dunk me. I think you were all of six years old. I've always been so proud of you and your accomplishments. Our conversations on the phone through the years have meant a lot to me. I will miss you and pray you are at peace. I love you!

I had not seen a doctor since I was in my young 20's and 6 years ago at the age of 62, I paid a brief visit to a doctor at Holy Cross who immediately referred me to Dr. Sturgill. I had two visits with Michael and he had that cheerful and caring disposition that made me feel like an old friend. I am beyond saddened to hear about his passing and there's no doubt in my mind that this loving man is in the company of Jesus Christ at this very moment. God Bless his family and friends.

My thoughts and prayers are with Mike's family. I hope you find strength in this difficult time by knowing that he was a wonderful, caring, thoughtful man. I truly enjoyed each and every interaction we had, and for an Infectious Diseases physician and a Neurosurgeon, that is saying something!! He was a special soul and he will be missed. But know in your heart, he made a difference in many people's lives.

Mike was my friend from childhood. We grew up in Twin Falls, Idaho and finished high school together with the graduating class of 1973. In glancing back at those memories, I see details of Mike's life forever imprinted on my own. The split level house he grew up in, the Sturgill's big family Suburban, his handsome older brother, his sweet younger sisters and his smart little brother. Mike's mother and father, Beverly and Gene, were very kind to my family when our dad passed away in 1971 and they were there for our mother during her terminal illness in the mid-90's. Gene used to bring our family sweet corn from his backyard garden and he successfully managed our mother's investments for many years. Beverly stopped by for heart-to-heart visits and I still have Illuminata, the book of prayers and meditations she gave to our mom. Bev was the creative director of the children's theatre group in Twin Falls and gave me a few wonderful roles to play when I was young.

I crossed paths with Mike on a number of occasions after we both moved away from Idaho. Mike was a stimulating and enriching conversationalist and I always enjoyed the magical quality of our hometown connection. I was born in Chicago while my father was studying dentistry at Northwestern, but have never been to visit in my adult life. Mike once offered to be my Chicago tour guide and told me he would take me to the opera when I came to the city. That visit did not come to pass----perhaps in another lifetime Mike. .

With fond memories and deep condolences to Michael's family,

In loving memory of a wonderful person. Michael's smile in the hallway was always refreshing. His calm demeanor and professional skillset was a gift to Sinai's patients. Its hard to imagine he is no longer with us. Many of those whose life he touched and saved will live to tell of his greatness as a person and as a surgeon. I feel honored to be associated with him professionally and for the personal acquaintance.

Michael was kind and empathetic. He was engaging and patient. He was honest and trusted. He always went the extra mile to help others and spent the extra time to explain.
We shared patients together, some of whom are only with us today because of Dr.Sturgill's hands.
Michael gave many a second chance at life.
In the hospital hallways, we shared stories of the happiness and sometimes craziness of parenting, vacations in the Ozarks and other midwestern memories, all with smiles and laughs. Mike's joy was most evident when speaking of his children. When discussion of kids was the topic, a smile always lit up Mike's face and his happiness and pride was undeniable! I am so sorry to hear of his passing and wish your family peace and strength.
Michael worked so hard, always with selflessness, integrity and dedication. He will be deeply missed but we will always reminder his goodness.

I would l like to extend my condolences to Dr. Sturgills family on this sad loss. I had the honor of working with him at Mt. Sinai in the SICU for many years and witnessed his skill, caring, and compassion for everyone he touched - patients, families and staff alike. He was always so excited about his work. I remember one instance when he was happily sharing details of the last surgery using a new titanium cage and I just let him tell me all about it even though I really wasnt sure exactly what he was talking about. My favorite conversations however were about our kids. Hearing his pride in his older children and funny anecdotes about caring for the twins. The love for you all was palpable. The world has lost a great man.

Dr. Sturgill was a role model to me as a young medical student and physician. The stories he told about his work and the patients were inspiring and motivating for me. I'm now a surgeon, in part, because of the example he set for me.
Sending love and prayers to the whole family...

I had the privilege to work with Dr. Sturgill for over 10 years. He worked countless hours to take care of people that had nowhere else to turn to for help. He always put others first and did it with honesty, respect and loyalty. The only thing he loved more than helping his patients was his kids. He shared many stories that always made him so proud. He became a good friend over the years and will be truly missed.
