Mildred Myren Obituary

Mildred "Millie" Hallett Myren, 85, passed away peacefully on February 1, 2021. She was the loving wife of the late P. Arthur Myren, and is survived by her beloved children, Janice Miller (Mike) and Mark Myren (Patti); adoring grandmother to Michael (Jen), Emily, Annie, and Kevin Myren, and Michael, Jason, and Jessica Miller, and Danny, Jimmy, Shannon, Mickey, and Luke Dwyer; and loving sister to Marilyn Granzyk (Steve). She was loved and will be missed by nieces and nephews Tracy Granzyk, Kathleen Huber (Mark), and Steve Granzyk (Megan) and their children. Millie was ordained into the Christian Ministry by the American Baptist Churches in 1998, and served as Interim Minister at Morgan Park Baptist Church, where she was a lifelong member. She also served as Interim Executive Minister for American Baptist Churches of Metro-Chicago. Her love of music permeated her entire life from singing in church and community choirs, to playing the piano, to preparing music for worshipful church services. Millie will be remembered for her unconditional love of family, her generosity of spirit, her passion for books and words, and devotion to her God. A memorial service will be planned at a later date. In lieu of flowers, if you would like to make a donation, please do so in Millie's name to Court Theatre, 5535 S. Ellis Avenue, Chicago IL 60637.

Oh how we miss Millie; her sweet smile and gentle manner. MPBC doesn't seem the same, but her spirit lingers there. Keith will never forget Art and Millie, who were always there to offer their friendship and to help him navigate the social nuances of being part of his church community. Blessings to all.

Millie was my colleague as a woman in ministry for many years, though my ordination preceded hers by decades. Just today I was remembering her to another friend, and decided to Google her since we had lost touch. I was so sorry to see her passing, especially at this challenging time. She was the most warmly professional, deeply faithful person I have known at the old Chicago Baptist Association or the newer ABCMC. For years we sat on the Ordination Commission together making both heartwarming and also occasionally difficult decisions. Back in those days, Millie would order everyone a turkey club with cranberry sauce that could re-civilize any contentious conversation. She was salt of the earth. I loved her and honor her memory.

We were so sorry to hear about Millie's passing. I had a lovely note from her at Christmas. We enjoyed the times we went to the Court Theater with Millie and Art and ate her marvelous apple cake. We also had a love the jigsaw puzzles in common. Please know you and your family are in our prayers.

Having known Millie (and Art) since the mid 1960s, we were greatly saddened by her passing. Our acquaintance began in a women's volleyball group held at the LaGrange YMCA. Several of us bonded and we decided to rent the gym for evening games to include our husbands. Millie soon suggested using the gym at the Morgan Park Baptist Church and we subsequently played volleyball there monthly for nearly 40 years, with the same core group of 4 couples, adding & losing others along the way. (Son Mark and daughter Jan were even occasionally called in as "ringer" reinforcements.) And, of course, no evening was complete without going out to a restaurant afterward. Fond memories!
Millie & Art were a modern Renaissance couple: interested and active in their church and community, patrons of the arts, avid readers and life-long learners who used their many talents in the service of others, all of which Millie continued after Art's death. Those of us who were privileged to know Millie had a steadfast friend as well as role model.
She will be sorely missed but never forgotten!

Sending prayers to all of the Myrens on the passing of your beautiful mother. We have such great memories of living on Seeley with you as neighbors and friends. We hope you take comfort in the wonderful life she led and by her example. She was always so kind to our mother at Smith Village when she would attend the Bible Study there. May she rest in peace. Dear Family and Friends of Millie. We are so saddened to hear of Millie's passing. She was a dear friend to us along with Art. We had many great times together and Millie was a valued colleague. Our relationship began in about 1977 when I began the ordination process in Chicago and Millie was on the Commission and signed my ordination certificate. Millie was a joy to know.

I got to know and appreciate and love Millie through our Coffee Break Bible Study group at Grace Community CRC in Oak Lawn. As one of the co-leaders of the group, we appreciated so much Millie's gentle wisdom and encouragement to so many of our members. Millie and I shared a love for the ministry, and we also shared several lunches together before Covid took away that privilege. We were looking forward to doing that again. I will deeply miss Millie as a friend dear friend and fellow laborer in Christ's vineyard. Our loss is heaven's gain.

We were fortunate to have had our Green Lake Conference Center home next to Millie & Art. We enjoyed many visits with them and listened to Millie many time and always had excellent sermons. Millie was a dedicated and committed Christian who lived her faith. We feel previleged to have known her and shared her friendship.

Rev. Mildred Myren, "Millie" has been a Light to most of us who know and love her still. She had this wonderful ability to make people feel welcomed and appreciated whenever she met someone new. In meetings her discernment skills about processes and best practices helped others to do their parts well and she made herself available to those who needed extra coaching. Her love for our Lord was unashamedly clear and she walked intentionally in the purposes for which she believed God ordained for her.
Millie´s smile could melt and iceberg and her pastoral ministry, attentive spirit and gift for hospitality and music made gatherings highly enjoyable and fun.
I personally appreciate her referral for me, many years ago, as a newly ordained clergy woman from Morgan Park Baptist Church. The referral was for a new position as chaplain for a senior residence in Maywood, Illinois. That position and her support has prepared me for many blessed and varied experiences in service to God´s people.
Her love of and service to God, and her love of family, church, the ABCMC Region, and her love and connection to our ABC, USA denomination will always give a reason to smile and remember her Light that could not be hidden. I am sure that I can state, without reservation, that Rev. Mildred (Millie) Myren has been a guiding Light for those of us who knew and loved her. May she Rest In Peace from all of her work and care of the other, done in the precious name of Jesus Christ and for the sake of his Good News.

Rev Millie Myren was a beautiful person inside and out. I remember her warm welcome when I attended my first ABC Metro Chicago meeting. We pray that our Lord comforts her family and many friends during this surprisingly challenging period.

Romans 12:15b NIV reads"...mourn with those who mourn."

With this news, the members of The Home Church mourn with the family and Morgan Park Baptist Church members on the transition of Rev. Myren. She was an icon and ministerial giant within the ABCMC family. We pray blessings of God's peace, comfort, and love upon each of you during this time of grief and loss. May the Creator lift you all up and hold you closely.
Peace and blessings,
Damon

I had the pleasure of working with Millie when I chaired a search committee at Community Baptist Church in Warrenville. She was a gifted leader. Among other contributions, she helped congregations to see the possibilities of women in a pastoral role. My sympathies are extended o all her family and friends who will miss her. "Well done, good and faithful servant; enter into the joy of your Master."

We are so deeply sorry for your loss and ours. What a friend Millie has been to my son Keith especially since Art's passing. Art and Keith had become particularly good friends over the years. I will personally miss Millie's warm and engaging welcome whenever we chanced to meet. Keith will miss her unconditional friendship and wisdom about many things and like how to navigate social situations. She always had a terrific sense of humor and a kind and loving demeanor. She is an especially memorable individual. Our deepest condolences to her adored children, grandchildren, and all to whom she was a shelter in the storm. Charline and Keith McGrath

Deepest sympathy to Millie's family on her sudden passing. I got to know Millie through Coffee Break bible study at Grace Community Church over the past three years. She was a loving, caring and compassionate person with a beautiful soul. During 2020 we realized we shared the same hobby of doing jigsaw puzzles and we frequently swapped puzzles. We said we were Puzzle Pals. There's great sadness in my heart today. Millie will certainly be missed. May God bring you peace, strength and comfort as you grieve the loss of your loved one, sweet Millie.
