Nadine Doughty Obituary

Nadine "Dee" Doughty passed away on July 15, 2018. A resident of Northbrook since 2015, she was 84. All who crossed her life's long and active path will remember her exceptional intelligence, generosity, warmth, compassion and optimism, as well as her deeply held commitments to family, friends, community and making the world a better place. Born in Yonkers, New York, she was the fifth child to Elsa and Ernest Neuburg. After earning a full academic scholarship to attend Smith College, she graduated Phi Beta Kappa in 1955. During her college years she also met William "Bill" Doughty of Winnetka, Illinois, and the two married in 1956. Together they raised three sons, and they remained deeply in love. Throughout her life, Dee committed herself not only to her family but also to the welfare of her community and to equity in the world. As a young parent in the early 1960s, she co-founded the Glenview Human Rights Committee, which supported the community's peaceful racial integration. At St. Augustine's Episcopal Church in Wilmette, where she and Bill have been members for nearly 50 years, she served on the vestry, edited the church newsletter, and she co-founded and led the church's Christian Outreach Commission that aided refugee families in the Chicago area and supported food pantries. Her professional work expressed similar values. At the North Shore Senior Center in Winnetka, she served as program coordinator for 11 years, designing and leading activities and speaker programs. She then devoted herself to a lifelong desire to reducing suffering from hunger, first managing St. Cyprian's Food Pantry on Chicago's northwest side, which served several hundred families and later working as publicity and outreach editor at the Chicago Anti-Hunger Federation, which served the metro area. Simultaneously, she served for several years as volunteer chair of the North Shore CROP Hunger Walk, which annually draws several hundred participants and raises thousands of dollars for the global anti-hunger efforts of Church World Service. After retirement, she poured her energy into writing poetry. Marvels of nature large and small, mysteries of faith, joys of grandparenting, delight of discovery through travel and, above all, the dimensions of her love for Bill and her family-all found expression in spare, carefully chosen verse. Published regularly in magazines connected to faith or to her and Bill's favorite destination for relaxation, Door County, Wisconsin, she also sold copies of her two books of poems to raise funds for anti-hunger programs. She is preceded in passing by her brothers, Waldo, Gerald and Hugo Neuburg, and her sister, Dagmar Bubriski. She is survived by Bill, her beloved husband of 62 years; her three sons, Richard, Roger, and Bruce; their spouses Kathryn, Royce, and Maria; and four grandchildren, Neil, Austin, Charlotte and Connor. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 25, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at Saint Augustine's Episcopal Church, 1140 Wilmette Avenue, Wilmette, IL 60091. Interment: Saint Augustine's Columbarium. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Greater Chicago Food Depository at www.chicagosfoodbank.org. Info: www.donnellanfuneral.com or (847) 675-1990.
