Nell Behr Obituary

Nell Marie Behr, Born 8/16/01, taken from us by an alleged drunk driver, traveling the wrong way on a dark, Jacksonville, FL highway, early on the morning of 1/14/23, and succumbing to her injuries on 1/15/23. In old English, the name Nell means "bright, shining one" - and so was our Nell. She grew up in Oak Park, IL and graduated from OPRF High School where she was a starting athlete on both the swim and water polo teams. She was a Girl Scout for 12 years, volunteering within the community and, especially, to help special-needs children in playing soccer and enjoying other activities. Always busy, she worked hard to build a future, holding as many as three jobs at the same time. On 1/5/23, just ten days before her death, she had graduated from beauty school and was excited by the prospect of bringing smiles to people. Always concerned for others, Nell chose at the time she received her first driver's license to, in the event of her death, become a donor. In so doing, our bright, shining one, has brightened the lives of so many. Nell is survived by her mother, Monique (nee Fanning), father, John Behr, siblings Tess(Micah), Lisa(Aaron), & Matthew, numerous loving aunts, uncles, niblings, cousins, & friends. A private memorial is planned. In Lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to: https://fundraising.madd.org/index.cfm?fuseaction=donorDrive.personalCampaign&participantID=2535

I just found out about this horrible tragedy from the Wednesday Journal. My thoughts and prayers are with Monique, John and Tess. I recall driving Nell to ice skating in Franklin Park with my daughter many summers ago. May Nell rest in peace.

What a beautiful tribute for a powerful soul that left us far too soon. Watching Nell in the water, be it swimming or her passionate water polo playing was a joy, any day of the week. I can see her pull herself out of the pool and storm across the deck with the force and strength that her loving family nurtured in her. Her adoring Tess, up in the stands, calling *That's my sister!!!* whenever a goal was scored, brings tears to my eyes, still. We should all be so lucky to find ourselves in such a positive, capable, loving family as the Behrs.

I just read about the tragic and senseless loss of Nell. As a retired police officer, I have unfortunately seen this story of broken hearts repeated far too many times. Nell´s life looked filled with success due to hard work. She also had a big heart as evidenced by her volunteerism which compelled a total stranger like me to offer my deep condolences. Sending you all of God´s love.
