PAUL MASSI Obituary

Paul D. Massi, 84, of Lincolnwood, passed away on Saturday, Sept. 26, 2009, at home, surrounded by his loving family. Paul was born in Chicago on March 23, 1925 and attended Sullivan High School in Chicago. He served in the US Navy Air Corps in WWII in both Europe and the Pacific. Paul was the owner and proprietor of the PM Club, a bar, restaurant and liquor store on Howard Street in Chicago, that was for many years a favorite destination for Northwestern University students, who Paul welcomed in a gruff, authoritarian manner, but with a big heart. The essence of the PM Club was captured in a song performed one year in the annual Northwestern WaaMu talent show. In later years, Paul worked for Stefani's Restaurants, which he enjoyed immensely and where he made many good friends. Paul enjoyed reading, travel, a good debate, Ronald Reagan, Frank Sinatra and spending time with his family and many friends of all ages. He was small in stature, but large in personality, generosity, zest for life and love of people. Paul is survived by his loving wife, Charmaine, nee Monini, whom he married on Aug. 26, 1950; his daughters Donna (James) Proesel, of Lake Forest, IL., Nancy (Mike) Ritter, of Winnetka, IL., and Christina (Victor) Filippini, of Lake Forest, IL.; his grandchildren, Matthew (Elizabeth), Christopher (Michelle), James (Katie) and Gretchen Proesel, Whitney, Kathryn and Michael Ritter and Amelia and Veronica Filippini; and his sister Marianna (Theodore) Wattenberg, of Prospect Heights, IL. Funeral Monday, 9:30 a.m., from Smith- Corcoran Funeral Home , 6150 N. Cicero Ave., Chicago, to Queen of All Saints Basilica, 6280 N. Sauganash Avenue, Chicago for Mass at 10 a.m. Interment All Saints Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Miseracordia, 6300 N. Ridge Ave, Chicago, IL., 60660 or Midwest Palliative Hospice Care Center, 2050 Claire Court, Glenview, IL., 60025. Tina and family -- I just read about your dad's passing in the Regina newsletter. It brought back memories of Tina taking off from Regina with her dad on a Friday afternoon to hit the slopes at Wilmot or Alpine. I remember thinking, "What a great dad." A man who truly enjoyed spending time with his children. You must miss him terribly but you're so blessed to have had such a loving father.

Dear Massi family,

My deepest sympathies to the passing of your father. I'm Dale Clock and I wrote the PM Club Song and performed it on the 45 rpm record that played in the Juke Box at The Club. Paul was a great guy. His picture posted here is exactly as I remember him. His place meant a lot to me and being there with him always brought a smile to my face. I'm honored that my song meant so much to him. Just today I got an email from someone looking for a copy of the song to download. Which caused me to search on the internet for the PM Club and I came across Paul's obituary. If you would like a copy please contact me and I would be happy to send one to you. My thoughts are with you.

Dear Nancy,
I was looking you up to call you when I saw the sad announcement about your Dad. He was so fantastic, funny, full of energy and we had a great time at our graduation. My parents remember him also with a smile on his face and always kidding. I know how close you were to him, you were his little girl. I think I have in a trunk somewhere the T shirt from PM Club!
Hoping you find peace and strength from friends and family.
Love,
Connie

I've known Paul for over 40 years. He gave me a job at the PM Club the summer before law school. He was a close friend.
I'll never forget what he told me when we were drinking in a Rush Street bar in my late 20s. We had been admiring the lovely ladies for some time. After awhile he turned to me and said, 'I never thought I'd say this but love really does get better with my wife after all these years.' Thanks Paul for all the good advice you gave me over the years. My mom always told me what a good influence you were in my life. Thanks, Paul. God bless.

I remember Paul saying he was too young to be called Uncle. I remember him assembling my bicycle, Char & Paul telling me about alcohol when I was a teen. He paved the way for a better paying part time job at A.C. Nielsen. I remember him cooking up chili or hamburgers at the tavern. I was so proud he entrusted me with information to tell my mother (Marianna). He also told me to stand straight and admired my little baby. Later he asked what was I going to do with my life when my children didn't need me so much. I remember Paul telling me all his mother (Vera) had left was INDEPENDENCE. Now he made his decisions his way.

Dear Massi Family,

Paul always had a smile and was a wonderful family friend and neighbor and almost lifelong friend to my dad and mom. I wish that I could be there with my mother and sister to give you my condolences in person. My thoughts are with you all. It is an incredible loss but what a huge contribution he made to the lives of others because he was so special.

All my love, Laurie Fleishman Spear
