Paul Samuelson Obituary

Paul F. Samuelson, 77, an artist and former advertising director for the educational publisher Science Research Associates, died Wednesday, October 17, of advanced Parkinson's disease. Mr. Samuelson was born in Springfield, Ohio, and lived there until 1950. He attended the Dayton Art Institute, the Chicago Academy of Art, and graduated from Ohio State University with a BFA. He worked for the advertising agency Campbell Ewald in Detroit, Michigan, before coming to Chicago to work on the Sears Catalogue and then for SRA. He married Ann Mellinger of Springfield in 1951. The couple had a daughter, Lucy, and a son, Jay. They were divorced in 1975. Mr. Samuelson retired from SRA in 1979 but continued on as a consultant while pursuing an independent career in art. He was actively involved in the gay community in Chicago. He briefly had his own gallery on Southport, but mostly worked out of his home. He traveled to more than 34 countries, painting landscapes, interiors and street scenes. His one-person exhibits include the Springfield Art Museum, Triton College, University of Dubuque, Zanesville Art Center and the Chicago Cultural Center. His work has been included in juried exhibits in Chicago and many cities in the Midwest. His paintings are part of the permanent collections of the Butler Art Museum and the Springfield Art Museum. He is survived by brothers, Don and Roger Samuelson; his sister, Louise Bauer; his son, Jay (Susan) Samuelson; his daughter, Lucy (Gary) Millman; and grandchildren, James and Hope, for whom he will always be ''GrandPaul.'' Memorial Services will be held at 2 p.m., on November 10, at the Unity Church, 1925 West Thome Avenue, Chicago. Memorial contributions to Parkinson's Research Foundation and the Howard Brown Clinic in lieu of flowers, please.
