Peter Bromley

1956 - 2016

Peter Yarwood Bromley of Jacksonville FL died after a brief illness on September 2, 2016 at the age of 60. Peter is survived by his mother, Janet E Bromley of Huntington WV, by his brothers Darwin P Bromley (wife Trella) of Jacksonville FL, David B Bromley (wife Julie) of Glenview IL, and William H Bromley (wife Nancy) of Morton Grove IL, and by his beloved nieces and nephews Miriam and Claire Bromley of Morton Grove IL and Elizabeth, M. Paul, Janet, and Daniel Bromley of Jacksonville FL. He is preceded in death by his father N. Paul Bromley and his grandparents Darwin and Janet Ensign and Norman and Elizabeth Bromley, all of Huntington WV. Peter Y Bromley was born on March 23, 1956 in Huntington WV to N. Paul and Janet E Bromley. He graduated from Culver Military Academy in 1974, then attended The University of Chicago graduating in 1978. After graduation Peter settled in Rolling Meadows IL and remained there until he retired and moved to Jacksonville in 2015. Peter never married. Peter's great love was adventure and strategy games. From as early as 1962 Peter shared playing and then collecting games with his brother Darwin. Together they amassed an extensive collection of early adventure games, including most of the early war games, then role playing games, and then collectible card games. The collection has remained intact and has been donated to the National Museum of Play for the benefit of gamers and researchers in the future. Peter and Darwin with several other gamers founded Mayfair Games Inc, in 1981. Peter acted as the conscience of the organization, attending to its financial health as well as the high quality of the product it produced. He was a sometime game designer and product developer and assisted in art direction, marketing, sales, and even shipping. Peter was the one constant presence at Mayfair from its founding until this year. Peter was a reliable and generous friend to everyone he met. He travelled extensively, often to play or demonstrate the games he so loved. He also loved good food and fine wine, sharing many entertaining evenings with his family or with his gaming friends. He doted on his nieces and nephews, and Uncle Peter provided consistent support for all their activities. Peter loved animals, particularly the family cats and dogs and was the easy touch for a treat when he was present. He will be sorely missed by many. Viewing is scheduled for 10 am and funeral at 11 am on Thursday, September 8 at the Klingel-Carpenter Mortuary, 328 6th Ave, Huntington WV 25701.The Rev. Timothy S. Dixon, pastor of First Congregational United Church of Christ, will officiate the ceremony. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Peter's life.
