Phyllis Rouse Obituary

Phyllis Rouse was born Philomena Anastasia Oko on September 30, 1922 in Chicago, IL to Michael and Zofia Oko, first-generation immigrants from Poland. She was the middle child in a Catholic family of seven siblings, Anne, Marie, Stanley, Alex, Valentine, and Dorothy. When Phyllis was a young teenager her mother and older brother passed away, and Phyllis became the family nurturer, a role that would come to define her life. In 1944 Phyllis received a Bachelors degree in business education from Illinois State Teachers College in Normal, IL. She became a stewardess for United Airlines when the industry was less than ten years old and was active in Clipped Wings, a retired stewardess' organization, for many years. While attending college she met and fell in love with Lawrence H. Rouse, originally of Mundelein, IL. In 1945 Phyllis and Larry married; she remained a devoted and loving wife until his death in 1999. Phyllis and Larry made their home in Grayslake where they raised a family of five children, Michael, Karen "Willow", Julia, Philip, and Ralph. In 1963 they moved to their waterfront estate on Round Lake, which was to be Phyllis' home for the rest of her life. During her husband's tenure a Superintendent of Grayslake Community High School, Phyllis attended no less than 38 proms. It was one of the students who originally nominated her for the 1957 Mrs. Illinois competition. Crowned Mrs. Illinois, Phyllis was seventh runner-up for the title of Mrs. America that year-receiving first place for her chocolate frosting and ironing! A fashion model for Heins Department Store, Phyllis remained an exceptional beauty her entire life. Phyllis was a faithful parishioner and supporter of St. Gilbert Catholic Church in Grayslake for more than 60 years. She was also an active member of Questers, Grayslake Women's Club, and Easter Seals. Phyllis passed away on Easter Sunday, April 12, 2009, at Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, IL, the same hospital where she gave birth to all five children. She was 86 years old.

Phyllis was preceded in death by her husband; parents; six siblings; and her daughter, Willow Wood.

She is survived by her son, Michael Rouse of Jacksonville, FL; daughter, Julia Rouse of Port Townsend, WA; son, Philip Rouse of Bristol, WI; and son, Ralph Rouse of Warrens, WI; as well as ten grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Phyllis lived a rich, full life. She will be remembered for her sense of humor, her generous nature, and the grace with which she handled life. A visitation is scheduled for Wednesday, April 15, 2009 from 4:00pm until 8:00pm at Strang Funeral Chapel & Crematorium, 410 E. Belvidere Rd., Grayslake, IL 60030. The funeral mass will be held on Thursday, April 16, 2009 at 11:00am at St. Gilbert Catholic Church, 301 E. Belvidere Rd., Grayslake, IL 60030. I'm sure she will be dearly missed by all who knew her. Once again, our deepest condolences.

Aunt Phyllis was pure elegance. Phyllis Oko Rouse’s outer beauty was obvious to any eye; but anyone that had the privilege of knowing Phyllis, knew her inner beauty truly defined this lovely woman with a great sense of humor. I think what mostly touched me about Aunt Phyllis was her love and devotion to her husband, Uncle Larry and all of her family. She loved her family and life with a full heart and her family and life loved her as well.

The family gatherings at the Rouse’s home are some of my fondest memories. The hearty laughs, wonderful food and the “had to be there” experiences made for some great conversations for many years to come. These gatherings were unique chapters in my life. I am forever grateful to Aunt Phyllis and Uncle Larry for sharing their home and making everyone feel welcomed. They were always so gracious to all that came aboard.

To my cousins and their families, I offer my heartfelt condolences to you. I hope it gives you comfort to know that your mom, grandmother and friend is at peace in her new home – I also believe there is a lot of Polka celebration with the Oko clan at this time. I wish you all a wonderful life and hope to keep in touch. It was so nice to see all of you.

With Love, Your cousin ~ Valenteen

Dear Rouse family: Our thoughts and prayers go out to you in this time of great loss. While we did not have the privilege to meet his parents, we knew them through the loving eyes of their son, Michael, who has been our dear and loyal friend for many years. We are sure he acquired many (if not all!) of his sterling qualities through their influence. May the cherished memories of your parents sustain you now and in the future. Much love,

It has been an honor to grow up with the gracious influence of this wonderful woman. She was and always will be the Grande Dame. She was always a comfort to me when I needed some extra maternal guidance. I am blessed to have been part of her family. She is now with Grandpa, Grandma and her brothers and sisters. They are surely having a great celebration in heaven. I could hear the whole Oko gang celebrating the last couple of nights. They were laughing and singing as loud as ever! I will miss all of them until I join them. Aunt Phyllis had the best Easter Egg Hunts and the best lawn parties. We never knew who would be dumped into the lake. I think we all had our turn. I still think of Aunt Phyllis when I make her famous corn souffle recipe. I had the best time ever reminiscing with the Rouse cousins. Please stay in touch. Your Dad and Mom will always be remembered as the most honorable of all people. They left all of the Oko cousins a wonderful legacy. They will be remembered in our prayers along with all of the other Oko's that have gone before us. Yes, Laura, we are now "The Old Aunts". Love to all Oko cousins.
Your cousin,
Lynn Ann

Phyllis became my sister-in-law in 1952. My children and I have shared many wonderful times with Phyllis and her family along, with Grandpa Oko. She always opened her heart and her home to all of us. I will carry these fond memories in my heart forever.

Aunt Phyllis was like a breath of fresh air. Her uplifting spririt made anyone feel at ease with her. Beyond her beauty and gracefulness, she had a real sense of humor. She seemed to always have a funny or sarcastic story to share. She will be greatly missed. I will remember how she opened up her home to Tim and I when we needed a dry place to stay from camping in the rain. We asked to stay one night and ended up staying the rest of the week. We were pampered with fresh linens, meals and wonderful conversation. How could we ever leave. God be with you.
