Ralla Klepak Obituary

Ralla Klepak, 82, died April 25, 2019 after a brief illness. Ralla, a legendary attorney, whose career accomplishments spanned many areas of the law, was well-known for her precedent-establishing struggles on behalf of the LGBTQ community and her tireless efforts in family law. Ralla, who attended Northwestern University for her undergraduate and post-graduate degrees, and John Marshall Law School for her J.D., received in 1964, began her professional legal career working with her father, Jack Klepak (now deceased), who introduced her to the non-text book practice of law, instilling in her the love for her profession which she never abandoned. For decades Klepak defended owners and employees of gay bars, as well as their patrons, against police raids and harassment for, starting in the 1960's when legal services for the LGBTQ community were almost non-existent. She also took on individual civil and criminal cases for people whom she believed were being ill-treated by the legal system, often stating that one of her chief concerns was to try and make sure the "system worked for everyone" or everyone "at least had the opportunity to have the best representation she could mount." Ralla's interests in social justice led to the development of a strong bond with Sister Margaret Traxler. She campaigned with Traxler, advocating for women's rights, freedom of choice and better treatment for women in prison throughout the United States. She championed same-sex-partner adoptions and helped make possible for surviving partners to inherit estates in the years before the legalization of gay marriage. Klepak offered her legal services in changing birth certificates and legal names for numerous transgender-clients. She defended gay servicemen in court martial cases and provided estate planning for those dying of complications stemming from AIDS. In 2017 Klepak was very proud to be inducted into the Chicago LGBT Hall of Fame for her service commitments to that community. She was member of various legal organizations throughout her career, taught law at IIT Kent College of Law and was a tireless advocate for the rights of children in contentious family law matters, working up to the time of her death. She left no immediate survivors, but a legacy that will last as long as those who knew her walk this earth. Services will be held on Tuesday, April 30, 1:30 p.m. at Chicago Jewish Funerals, 8851 Skokie Blvd., Skokie, Illinois, with internment following at Shalom Memorial Park in Arlington Heights, Illinois. In lieu of flowers please send contributions to the Ralla Klepak Foundation for the Performing Arts, c/o Miriam Solo, Attorney at Law, 6538 N. Sacramento Avenue, Chicago, Illinois 60645.

Ralla was the most amazing advocate for my children during a very difficult time. I remain forever grateful for her intuitiveness and tenacity on their, as well as, my behalf. It was an honor to have known you, Ralla. Godspeed.

I cannot believe Ralla is gone. She was a 2nd mother to me. I am Dr. Ralph Gradman's daughter who was not only her physician but a dear friend. Her and I had so many funny and fun times in Florida. I think of all the things we did together and then cry knowing that I will never be able to speak and or lean on her. I miss you my dear friend and I am so blessed that my daughter proudly carries your name. R.I.P.

I have never met Ralla in person. We found each other online while searching for ancessors and relatives. We had so much in common. Today she came on my mind and I went online to write her. I am sorry I will not be able to reach you anymore here on Earth, but we meet in eternity.

Sorry to hear you are gone from the earth, but, a much deserved rest you shall have, Ralla. I will miss you as a patient at the dental office. Your conversations were very inspiring. Kathy

Ralla was an indefatigable fighter for the vulnerable and for justice. A fearless advocate for children in need and for the Rainbow Community, Ralla was tough when toughness was needed most: against prejudice, against abuse, against people who think they can get away with mistreating others, and against people who try to manipulate the system for their own selfish personal ends.

Many rush to the service of the rich and powerful. Few rush to serve those most in need. Ralla was one of those legendary few. Her loss leaves behind an incalculable void that I sincerely hope the Chicago legal community will work hard to fill.

Ralal was sometimes the only voice the voiceless had. And all who knew her appreciated the passion, as well as the legal scholarship, she brought to her work.

Ralla will be sorely missed.
Her memory serves as a blessing to us all.

Ralla was a person who it was a honor to know. In her life she touched many people not only with her ability's with the law, but with the person who she was. The legacy of her life will have a rippling effect that can not be measured. She will be missed.

Ralla was a special friend to my husband, Allan Falk, for almost 60 years since they were classmates at the John Marshall Law School, from which both of her parents, Jack and Dolores (Blumenthal)Klepak had also graduated. She was an extraordinary woman who excelled in anything that she undertook to do. I was truly privileged to have known her for over 43 years.

Ralla, we will miss you. Rest in peace.

I am proud to call Ralla Klepak my Aunt. She touched many lives through her profession but also in her personal life. My brother and I owe her a debt of gratitude for everything she did for us at a very young age. She was remarkable in her sense of principle and justice in her convictions but also showed such a selfless love for people that is truly inspiring. I really enjoyed our spirited discussions about a broad range of topics. She was truly a Renaissance woman and I just really admire her. You made the world a better place, Ralla. Love always,

My dearest Ralla, my heart is broken, cannot imagine our winters in St Petersburg without you, sunsets in Pass-A-Grill will be ever so gray even with a cloudless sky. That evening call: "where are we going for dinner tonight??? is already missed. Our 55 years of sisterhood will always be the greatest treasure until we meet again. Love you, Sylvia

I am devastated to learn of Ralla's death. We started law school together in 1960. I have loved her ever since. It was the only time that Ralla had nothing to say because she had just come from the dentist after a wisdom tooth extraction. My memories of her are sweet and her loss leaves a hole in my heart.
