RAPHAEL SULLIVAN Obituary
Raphael "Ray" Sullivan, 91, passed away peacefully on Friday, March 25th, 2011 at his residence, the Moorings of Arlington Heights, IL. Ray was born in Chicago on Feb. 19, 1920 to the late Laura (Griffin) and John Sullivan. After graduating from Mt. Carmel High School of Chicago in 1938, Ray went on to study education at the Chicago Teachers College. From there he went on to study at the John Marshall School of Law. Early in his career he practiced law and was a principal at Montefiore School, Chicago. He married his beloved Ann Gilmore on Jan. 9, 1954 at the Our Lady of Peace Church on the South Side of Chicago from where they both hailed, and they were married 57 years at the time of his death. Ray took pride in serving his country in the Air Force from 1942-1944 and for many years following in the Air Force Reserve. Ray concluded his career in education as the founding principal of Westinghouse High School in Chicago where he served for 20 years. When he retired from the field of education Ray and his wife Ann moved to sunny Kerrville, TX in 1987 where they lived for 23 glorious years and made many dear friends. During this time in Kerrville he was an active member of the Reserve Officers Association, the local investment club and Notre Dame Catholic Church. Last year they relocated to the Chicago area to be near family. Ray will be sadly missed by his wife Ann Sullivan; their two sons; and two daughters and their spouses: Mark Sullivan and Linda Wilson, Seattle; Frank Sullivan and Kathleen Duffy, Oak Park; Christine and Jim Duca, Wilmette; Laura Sullivan and LJ Zazycki, Oak Park. Ann and Ray's beloved grandchildren include: Katherine and Patrick Duca, Nora and Erin Sullivan, Julia and Elizabeth Zazycki, Lena and Elias Sullivan. Ray is also survived by his sister Lorraine Sullivan, of Lake Forest, IL, sister-in-law Bina Siem, and brother-in-law John Gilmore. In addition to his parents, Ray was preceded in death by his sister-in-law Hettie Hoggren , and his mother and father-in-law Sabina and John Gilmore. Friends may call at St. Giles Parish, 1025 Columbian, Oak Park, IL 60302, on Saturday, April 2 at 9 a.m. for visitation, at 10 a.m. for the funeral mass. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations in Ray's memory be sent to Midwest Hospice, 2050 Claire Court, Glenview, IL 60025, who generously provided comfort to him in his final weeks.
