Dr. Ray was one of our teaching attendings back in the mid-70's when I attended Northwestern. I was quick to learn that if one of his patients was admitted in labor, we were in for a pleasant time. His friendly and gentle nature made you happy to be able to assist him. He taught by example. And, as sometimes there was a long period of waiting before the work started, he was a formidable opponent at Bridge. I never heard the man raise his voice to any staff. He arrived with a smile and he would head back out with a smile. To his family, I extend my sincere sympathies and hope that the strength of faith and the spirit of the family at such a time will allow solace to quickly replace sorrow. Everyone has lost one of the true good guys.
