Richard Baron Obituary

Dr. Richard L. Baron, an international authority in diagnostic radiology, died unexpectedly on May 4th, 2017. He was 68. Widely respected by colleagues across the globe, he enjoyed a distinguished career as a clinician, researcher and educator, and received numerous awards for his pioneering work in diagnostic imaging of liver disease. A professor of Radiology at the University of Chicago, Dr. Baron chaired the department and subsequently became dean for clinical practice. Prior to that, he was chair of Radiology at the University of Pittsburgh and founding president and CEO of the University of Pittsburgh Physicians. Additionally, he served on the board of the Radiological Society of North America for eight years and was president in 2016. Throughout his career, Dr. Baron was dedicated to building bridges among radiologists around the world, forging a roster of lifelong personal and professional relationships along the way. A native of Longmeadow, Mass, Dr. Baron graduated from Yale University and earned his medical degree at Washington University in St. Louis. A man of many passions, he was an avid skier, tennis player and photographer, who shared his love of travel and cooking with Shirley, his beloved wife of 45 years. A devoted husband and father, he is survived by his wife, their two children, Timothy Baron and Christine Turner (Matthew), and his older brother, John Baron. A memorial service will be held at Rockefeller Chapel at the University of Chicago at 11:00 A.M., Wed., May 31th. The Baron family requests that in lieu of flowers, a donation be made to the RSNA Research & Education foundation. A fund has been established in memory of Dr. Baron to support a young radiology researcher. Donations can be made at www.RSNA.org/Donate or 1-877-776-2636.

I was privileged to work with Dr. Baron in Everett, WA. I am a sonographer and had many call nights with him. He never failed to bring an Orang Crush! His last with us, we gave him his "just desserts" with the music he loved.
Rest in peace dear doc.
