Richard Lappin Obituary

Richard "Dick" Lappin passed away at his home in Barrington on Sunday, May 1st at the age of 77 surrounded by family. Dick grew up in Detroit and came from humble beginnings. He was the fourth of six children to Tom and Helen Lappin. The family knew how to stretch a dollar and were long on love, hard work and determination. He attended Sacred Heart Seminary for high school with the aspiration of becoming a priest before ultimately deciding that starting a family of his own was important to him. He received an athletic scholarship for football and basketball to the University of Detroit; however, a broken leg while playing football led him to fencing, maintaining his scholarship. Dick's plans for starting a family began sooner than anticipated with the birth of his first daughter, Jill. Dick put school on hold and took a job on the assembly line for Chrysler to provide for his family. He was able to finish college by attending night school all while raising a growing family as he welcomed two more children, Rick and Nicole. Later he met Mimi, who through cruel serendipity had the same aversion to pollen that he did. What started with the lending of an extra allergy pill ended in a beautiful marriage of 39 years and two sons, Sean and Reid. It was Mimi who kept Dick grounded after his success. If not for Mimi, their house would be full of eccentricities that would have been rarely used and expensive to maintain. Alas, Mimi was not always successful, most clearly exemplified by a 15 foot bronze statue of a mime climbing a rope in their living room. His humble beginnings taught him the value of hard work and Dick was determined to ensure his own family didn't experience the financial pressures he grew up with. He used to say that there might be a hundred people in any given place that are smarter than you but you can out work them all. He proved that theory by working his way off the Chrysler assembly line into the mail room and eventually becoming the CEO of a Fortune 500 company and a Senior Managing Director of the largest private equity firm in the world. He never forgot where he came from or the values his parents instilled in him. As he became more successful in the business world he made it a priority to give to worthy causes, particularly that of St. Jude Children's Hospital. He had an infectious smile and was loved by many. His fondness of golf, bacon and chardonnay was only eclipsed by his love for his family and friends. Dick is survived by his wife Mimi, five children (Jill, Rick, Nicole, Sean and Reid), ten grandchildren and two great grandchildren. We will be celebrating Dick on Friday, May 6 at 1:30 at Saint Anne Catholic Community, 120 Ela St. (Corner of Franklin and Ela Sts.) Barrington, IL 60010 followed by what Dick described as "a big party where everyone is happy and having a great time" at Barrington Hills Country Club. All are welcome. Dick requested that "no one wears black" so the family encourages you to wear brightly colored attire, especially Dick's favorite color, yellow. Not sure what to say?

My condolences go out to Mimi, Sean, Reid, Nicole, Rick and Jill. I was only made aware of `Dick´s" passing a day ago, 5 months and 11 days later. Time will heal the broken hearted and the birth of new life will prevail.
My testimony of knowing Dick was nearly 15 years as with the rest of his family. Having the opportunity to provide them with the day to day in home property management needed, gave me first hand knowledge how a "house" became a "home" built by loving hearts. I experienced 2 small boys growing up, the visits from other siblings and grand babies, the two dogs, Shannon and Asia, and Lola the bird.
There is more to Dick that for some can only see through a looking glass. Yes, his favorite color was yellow, and every shirt in his closet was color coordinated in hews of yellow, blues and white. He traveled so much and stayed in nice Hotels that one day Mimi and I broke out in laugher standing in the Foyer stared into the family room after major renovations, Mimi said "Dick brought the Carlton Ritz home!" It was a wonderful moment of his reality. Yes, he did like the finer things in life and he didn´t have any problem justifying it, if he wanted it, he made it happen. He always´ had a positive outlook and never let the little things get in the way. I recall when Mimi was away and he arranged to have new carpet installed in the living room and purchased a Baby Grand Piano to be delivered before the limo pulled up to the door with Mimi. Timing was everything, down to the last detail. The look on her face was priceless. Mimi and Dick had a great love for one-another, not long after that, she countered the Baby Grand by purchasing a life size Maestro, who look like Einstein, complete with violin in hand, called "Victor". Not sure but think it was for Dicks Birthday.
They always´ left one-another little forget me not notes on the bathroom mirror, or Dick would make sure fresh flowers delivered for Mimi. It was always those little things that made the biggest impact. I never experienced such great admiration between to people. Their home was Dicks Castle for sure, and Mimi was his Queen and they complimented each other through the years I knew them both. Two beautiful people that dedicated their lives to family first and then to friends and others they didn´t even know.
Dick was a great Mentor to all of his children; he did lavish them in spoils but they also appreciated the value of it and were taught that hard work and dedication was the true key to success and not to take the lesser things for granted. There were many days they all spent on "the green" and as Dick would say `It was Action Packed". Yes, fried bacon, Chardonnay, and cigars was his way on almost daily basis, but his game of Soliaire and beating his own score was what I believe drove his determination to beat his own success.
My prayers go out to Dick and his family, I will always embrace the memories.
Eternal Rest Grant unto him.
